Simple delay... when the track goes silent

Post by cosmicbdog » Tue Nov 25, 2008 3:58 pm

Hey everyone... I want to do something with simple delay where say u have a wave that ends... I want the simple delay to only come in once the track goes silent. So while the sound of say guitar is playing and then echoes out on the last note or something close to that.

Is there a way to do this without manually recording on off simple delays? Like somehow connecting a compressor chain to a simple delay track or something of the sort?

I'm kinda a beginner with this so I apologise if that was a bit hard to understand.

Thanks!

Bobby

put the delay on a return and turn the return's volume down. Turn the send up and and when you want the delay to sound turn the return fader up

that's one way you could do it

It should be doable automatcally with two gate effects. I think...

Question, do you want to HEAR the effect or do you want it to begin processing when there is silence?

Nonsense, because if it processes at the beginning of silence, you will hear nothing at all....
I'll try.

+1

I'll usually assign the return track send knob to a button (instead of a knob) on my UC-33. That way it toggles on/off when you hold the button down. This way, the only part of the clip the gets sent to the delay return is between when you push and release the button. You could do the same with any key on your keyboard, depending on what controller(s) you use.

phew.. i half expected to come in here and be forum bashed for suggesting this to be automated. thanks everybody. go ableton!

technically i imagine the delay is always running... so it doesn't turn on actually, it just appears that way when listening.

i'm wanting to use this for live purposes... sometimes lyrics... so pushing a button to turn on delay isn't ideal for this situation. when i'm producing i don't mind so much doing it myself manually. how to produce the same effect though when i attempt to do this on a stage is something else though. i hear some artists just have that layer recorded and mix it in on stage but thats not where i'm at

so i could put the delay on the return track, put a compressor chain on the track i want to have this applied to. make it so that when the sound drops out it no longer cuts off the echo and wala, should have auto last sound delay.. i'll give it a go

thanks again

this is a 'ducking' delay - easy with a gate, a key, the odd utility plugin etc.

should be possible with a sidechained flipped gate.

put a delay into a return channel, a gate behind it, open the sidechain options, select the audiosignal that should control the gate. play with the settings until you have the gate opening when the signal is low.

Have you read about envelopes in the manual?
Ableton’s engineers are hard

anticipate having this available until at least the next major release.

Isn't this a simple ducking-side-chain-compressor thing (instead of a gate)? Put it in the return track after the delay and use the source as side-chain.

yip, I tried yesterday, Gate is a bit harsh, compressor is nicer.
