Choosing between 4 pieces of this or 8 pieces of this.
Either would cover about the same area.
My aim is to absorb as much freqs as poss, knowing that I will need bass traps to get right to the bottom end.
Which would be better?

rigid rockwool (fiberglass) panels have a greater freq absorbtion than way overpriced acoustic foam. For the same price as a few panels you can treat a whole room and it works better.
The down side is you have to cover them with fabric (DIY).

Yweah look for a mineral fiber board/rockwool reseller in your area, or someone who makes panels. (RIGID FIBERGLASS)
You don't want to spend more than $60 per 2'x4'x4" panel.
