Ableton GUI : (

Post by abort » Sun Jan 04, 2009 5:01 am

Really though, isn't their a way to texturize Ableton's GUI.

I think they could at least let us have some kinda background chooser., besides the skin editor which I thought was lame. I find it visually unstimulating not to have any field of depth while embarrassing such deep and rich sounds. I feel as if I'm trapped in a Windows 98 world.

Not even the knobs have a shadow or highlight to show where there at in the endless rows and columns of super cal spreed sheet like graphics.

Just MY opinion, but anyway....

It may just be your opinion. They're GUI in my opinion is the smartest, most practical around. I personally don't like my audio applications to visually mimic the look of either the real instrument or the traditional hyper chrome, gaudy, thing. No bevel. No shade. little chrome. thank you.

Yeah I totally know what your saying. but still thinks this could be just slightly tweaked. and I wouldn't mind a "chrome" panel in some places though.? or OR something.

I think you're swimming upstream here a bit, abort - the Ableton Live gui has been widely praised since the beginning, and I think clean, sleek graphics are at the forefront of the Live design.

Abort, for about two years here I've been part of the (misunderstood) minority of people who lobby for an improved GUI, or at least the option to turn on some sort of texturing or shading.

It's completely futile as unfortunatly you will always get shouted down by a reactionary majority who think you want to make Live look like Reason.

They usually miss the point that some subtle shading, texturing and gradiation is actually very useful in interface design, and can easily look quite tasteful.

I cant see Ableton implimenting it, in Live 8, but we will know very soon. They could at least assign different colours to the "Track Display" area and "Track Title Bar area in Arrangement view. This and some gentle gradient use on waveforms would make a big difference for starters IMO.

I'd like a massive rotary in the middle of the screen that is simply labelled "Rave".

This rotary should go up to 11.

Nothing more required.

+1 and the knob should have Rave's smiley face gif in the centre.

I want more chrome, a simulated motorized cooling fan and patch cables that wiggle.

While were making live more like hardware can we bring up the noise floor a little?
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

with henke on board i'm sure they won't change the gui. which is a good thing of course.
this may be a good opportunity to state how much i love live's gui, i think it's genius. it reflects live's functionality, it is so well thought out that it never had to be noticeably changed to add new features. it's not getting old. one thing: some of the colour schemes may not be the most tasteful, but nevermind. genius i say!

That GUI discussion is totally unnecessary. Live's GUI is an important part of the whole concept, reduced and easy to tweak, concentrated on fast results and without any knickknack.I think this design is better than any other DAWs around...
