Write and record an album during the month of February

Post by towers of silence » Wed Jan 07, 2009 4:04 pm

Want to see if you can write and record an entire album (10 songs or 35 minutes of original material) solely during the month of february? The RPM Challenge is now in it's 4th year and it's become a pretty amazing project, with people from all over the world participating. The year before last a guy stationed at McMurdo research base in Antarctica actually signed up and submitted a CD.

Check out the info here: www.RPMChallenge.com

And just to ad some reassurance, it's all on the level, it's not a front for a huge music conglomerate nor is it an attempt to get people's email addresses for market research/spamming, it's a 100% grassroots project and it's had submissions by artists spanning every genre of music, from weird microtonal stuff to Irish drinking songs. Lot's of Ableton users, (like myself) as well...

I've participated in this for the last three years:

http://fawm.org/

The challenge is to write 14 songs in 28 days. It's both exhilarating and painful. And while doing it you can't help but learn a great deal about songwriting. Also a very nice community.

I'm acutally looking forward to February each year.

I've never heard of RPM challenge though.

Eh? So there are 2 'February album' projects? Or do I have double-vision. Which one do I go for?

I want to do this - a deadline will motivate my music-making.

Yeah rpmchallenge is really worthwhile. I think there were like 3000+ participants in '08. No prizes, but it is a great thing to push you to finish a project, and a real sense of accomplishment to get it done. A compilation was put together from last year, and in the process of getting approval from the selected parties for public distribution. It was professionally mastered, so that is a bit of a prize, to get a song pro mastered for free...

Enter both - haven't checked the rules or anything but by what has been posted here, one compo needs 14 tracks, the other needs 14 tracks or 35 minutes. Satisfy both criteria by doing 14 tracks coming in at 35 minutes minimum.
Live 7, Logic Studio 8, Mac Pro 8-core/2.26/6GB, OS X 10.5.6, Saffire Pro 40, Alesis M1 Active 520s, Remote SL 37, Virus TI Snow, Nord Rack 2, Zebra 2, Sylenth1

That's exaclty why i'm so psyched to do this -- I only get shit done when I have a real deadline, even if it's a fairly arbitrary one. I just need *some kind* of outside influence to keep me on track. this is awesome.

anyway that seems motivating and refreshing !
