MaxforLive runtime?

Post by parma » Thu Jan 15, 2009 11:15 pm

I get the impression from the videos that a free (or cheaper) runtime only version of MFL isn't in the cards for those of us who don't want to get their hands dirty with all that Max stuff but still want to benefit from others' skills and generousity

But seeing as how there is a Max runtime I thought I'd ask if a MFL runtime is a possibility. I'm guessing not because I figure that many of the people that end up buying MFL will only use the included stuff or the stuff people share and maybe making small modifications to those things (sort of like how the Reaktor user library works - many users, few builders). So, if there are a lot of lazy bastards like me that probably won't contribute anything to the MFL community maybe a free runtime version isn't feasible from a money-making standpoint.

I'm pretty sure I just answered my own question here, but you never know...

was gonna ask the same question. i think it would be worth issuing at least a reduced price version just for ppl who don't want to make their own devices, etc. only thing i really hope for as this is clearly the biggest thing about the new ableton (amongst the other big things that hav just been announced)...guess u cant have everything.

If you can get your head around reading a manual and doing racks and routings and stuff.. you'll defintely be able to come up with something in Max. There will be a lot of modules that other people will make and you'll be able to customize them and connect them in new ways.

This is massive!

Would be pretty cool if they could just disable the edit button but still let you use pre-built modules. It would create a market and encourage professional developers to make nice plugs that integrate into live.

crumhorn - the max for live video implied or stated that would be the case.

not sure what that quote has to do with a runtime only version

(edited to make sense)

Yeah, that's what I'd probably want really. Although without building anything complicated, it might just be fun to make some simple/stupid sound mangling effects. I imagine what I could come up with would sound more like circuit bending than real sound design.

I'm sure you're right about being able to come up with something relatively easy. However, the way I see it is that if it's something I can come up with then it's something I don't want to waste my time with  (kinda like the old "I wouldn't want to belong to any club that would have me as a member" bit).

Thing is, between my 8-month old daughter, work, marriage, eating, sleeping, other obligations I get 2 hours a day to myself if I'm lucky. I don't really want to spend that time learning how to program in Max.

max is not difficult. people write it off before they even try it. dunno how people can go through life shying away from the smallest of challenges.

I think the rack analogy was a good one.

I don't know if that's directed at me or not, but I agree with you completely. It's not ability I lack, it's desire.

desire to not do something you've never tried.

probably if I met you it'd make more sense. I just don't get it, but we're all different and the interweb isn't the best way to get a true impression of someone. I love music, I love tweaking music, I love noise, Live and max are both great at that.

life is better with an open mind.

I was just pointing out that a runtime only version wouldn't be as a big an issue if Max was priced aggressively.

More info...

Here's some more info from Jeremy over at Cycling (the guy shaking hands in the video):

Quote: Jeremy Bernstein wrote on Thu, 15 January 2009
----------------------------------------------------

If you own Max, you still need to purchase a) Live 8 and b) the Max for Live feature for Live 8. Prices are not yet announced, but if you already own Max (and Live), it won't break your bank.

--------------------------------------------------

When you hit the edit button on your device, Max (or the Max in Live Editor) comes to the front, where you edit your device in Max fashion. While this is happening, Live-based audio and MIDI are still being routed to and from the patch you are editing in Max -- that is, you can hear what you are doing in Max. When you save and close the device in Max, you can return to Live and work with the updated device's interface from the Live device chain.

So, Live is where you "use" the device, Max is where you edit.

------------------------------------------------

> Cool. So javascript, mxj, C externals too?

Yes, yes, yes. C externals create portability issues, of course, but nothing that would surprise you if you work with collectives.

------------------------------------------------

Max for Live comes with a "Max Editor" (name tba), which is essentially a full install of Max with no built-in support for audio or midi communication -- audio and midi get in and out of the Editor via Live. If you own Max, you can use "normal Max" for your "normal Max stuff" and either Max or the "Max Editor", as you prefer, for editing Max Devices from Live.

So purchasing Max for Live essentially enables the Edit Button on the Max Device. If you don't own the full version of Max, the only Max editing you'll do is in the context of Live.

----------------------------------------

> I see, so Max for Live devices will be available to anyone then. My god you guys have just created a new industry.
----------------------------------------------------

Well, take that with a grain of salt. I never pay close enough attention during the marketing discussions. It may be that you need the Max in Live add-in to use the devices at all (which includes editing). I'll provide a more definitive answer after I've checked in with someone who spends more time thinking about that stuff...

-----------------------------------------

OK, here's the "definitive answer":

Users cannot use Max Devices without installing Max, obviously. Once Max is installed, they can use them, but they have to put Live into demo mode, if they don't own Max for Live.

So maybe this is not exactly what you were hoping for, but you can probably understand why it is going to work this way.
