Why does Live warp everything recorded, no matter the prefs?

Post by krank » Thu Jan 22, 2009 2:49 pm

Preferences set to un-warped one shot, auto-warp long samples off. Yet every time I record a clip, it gets warped.

...because it can not display the waveform otherwise.
Note that the timestretching does not affect the file in any way,
unless you are changing the global tempo while recording.

Or if you're default is set to Complex warp mode.

Anyway, add me to the list of people who wish there was some way around this, anything I record INTO Live is already at my project tempo, so I'd rather not have to manually turn off warping each time.

I swear I can hear a difference.

The Live 7 manual chapter 26 p.430 ff covers this topic.

Yeah, it says there's no difference.

simply record some audio to two tracks (the same recording done in parallel),
have one clip be beats mode and the other unwarped
put a Utility on one track,
invert the phase of the L and R in Utility
whatever you now hear is the 'difference' between the two tracks

prediction : you will hear no sound

My ears are sensitive beyond such technical mumbo-jumbo.

good, because that's what you will be using for this test.

Anyway - how can I make this test when everything is warped automatically in the first place? Eh?

warping is not a destructive process.
do you think that warping has altered the recording ?

just record the two tracks and turn off warping on one of the clips and then play them both back at the same time

I'm kidding.

Though I do find it annoying to have to manually turn off warping in all recorded clips after the fact.

Hi Krank,

you don´t have to manually turn off the warping after audio recording, just for this test.
It´ll show you, that a recorded audio file is absolutely identical when either

- Warp Is Off, or
- there is just the first warp marker set (no timestreching or other altering of the recorded file is applied then)

Exception: the Complex warp mode will always have an impact on the audio file, all other Warp modes don´t change the recording in this scenario.

I WAS KIDDING.

But thanks.

I'd still want to know if it's possible to change the auto-warping in a future version. And provide for looping without warping? I often record a batch of clips at a particular global tempo - then I change the tempo, only to find that my recorded clips have been warped along with it, thus having to manually un-warp them all (possibly after they've been distributed throughout the set). Not a big deal, but a bit annoying nonetheless.
