use it for every gig, really important. wish there were a few more video features (video launching in session, video fades/cross-fades, maybe simple compositing).

I use it a lot - really simple to edit downloaded clips it adds a new dimension to the music and in performance it gives the audience a bit more entertainment - anything's better than staring at someone bobbing their head as they like really intensely do yet another filter sweep.
Not at all surprised many people have never tried it. You need a bit of imagination.
+1 on it being more important than a step-sequencer.

video has been one of the main features of live that has actually paid bills

it's not meant to be fancy because its main purpose is for putting music to video - and in my case that's always meant supplying a Wav or Aiff to the video guy who isn't me

I am really glad that the video option is there. I do soundtracks for ads and corporate vids sometimes and it really helps being able to keep working in Live.

The creativity and flexibility of integrating audio and external video apps live in Live is huge.

AV is here to stay. The synergistic power of well-executed audio and video (and lighting) is so much more entertaining and immersive than audio only, especially when done interactively with the crowd. As there's nothing worthwhile to see with laptop musicians and DJs, well-designed and performed video and lighting makes for a far more compelling crowd experience. It's no substitute for quality audio, which IMO is first and foremost.

The integration of MIDI control in programs like Motion makes working with Live easy, and the low cost of MIDI controllers, VJ apps, projectors, cameras, and DMX lighting makes AV accessible to everyone.

Live interfaces brilliantly with VJ apps. I personally don't need any video functionality in Live. There's far more to be had with dedicated video applications.

I only wish there was more time!

I've never even looked at the video functionality before, so I just had a quick check of the manual to see what I was missing. Not a lot.

About the only use I would ever have for video in Live is to mix music video's instead of just audio, but it looks like this isn't possible. Support for video in session view and being able to use video effects along the lines of the effects / methods for mixing audio would be good. But I'd guess that the cpu power isn't there for that yet.

It actually has quite a lot of functionality in Live 7, the warping video is especially cool. It is not a video editing prgram, so you are not going to get all the video FX such as transitions and colorize effects and titling options etc of something like Adobe Premier, SOny Vegas, Avid or even Pinnacle 12 or what have you. This is the same for Cubase, Logic, DP, and others, where usually you are putting audio to video for soundtracks etc.

Although MfL with it's jitter functionality will allow quite a bit more.

I just tried it and it's great, I hate cheesy video fx anyway, looks really amateur. I do need an app to tweak colour contrast and curves so I guess I'll need to look at aftereffects but for straight editing to bars and beats it's very cool.

I don't use video in Live because I have other stuff to edit with, and those programs that I've had and used for years still have problems without me trying to use software that's only been at it almost two years. Also, Lives emphasis, obviously, is audio, not video, so it would be rough to go from FCP and Adobe AE to Live, for anything but audio. Especially with film scoring, Live just isn't viable, although I have used it to make chunks of scores prior to assembling them in FCP. Unless you plan on doing some really out there stuff, Soundtrack kicks the crap out of Live for sound design...it just isn't what Live focuses on, although, I'm happy with what live DOES do.

I agree but I think Ableton just put in it there for a way of making a live show more interesting, as Hambone noted.

It's still a useful tool even in it's limted way and I personally don't want them to prioritize video editing when there are so many apps that do that so well, it is still an audio/midi app with a little video functionality.
