After a control surface for Live

Post by tw1nstates » Fri Feb 06, 2009 11:28 am

Not for playing, rather for mixing.

Would like motorised faders and easy integration. ..

The reason - been reading about dub techniques recently and loving the idea of sending fx returns back to channels on the desk and then riding the faders to create textures.

But I have no faders to ride. . . Oh noes, the plastic has taken a battering this year so far!

So, Euphonix possibly, bit expensive for 4 faders though!

Behringer BCF2000 Total Recall USB / MIDI Controller Desk, right at the other en of th spectrum. . .

ANy other suggestions?

I have a Fireface 800 so in and outs therfore a digi desk not needed. . .

thanks

I find it just as much fun riding the return track sends (sending it back into itself) mapped to a knob on a UC33e.

...or even just with the mouse pushing the send up and down and bringing the feedback back in and out again to create variations. s'nice whatever you use i guess.

It is indeed a GOOD technique; and not just for dub.

Hey Rave,

Yeah been looking at the Euphonix,

at the moment it's a toss up between that and the mackie.
When you say the mackie is noisy, does it have a fan?

How noisy is the Euphonix?

How well does it integrate in Lie, would you recommend buying it etc. . .

I have just finishde mixing with your mind (which everyone should read btw!) he takls a lot about moving faders around with your hands and it makes sense so am keen to get a little more hands on. .

Thanks!

Thanks Rave,

I will check out the manual. Do you not loose a lot of functionality with just the mix version, can you still switch between applications etc?

By the way wasn't being lazy hitting you up for info, just trying to pare down the time spent reading and making sure that somehting will work the way I want before investing the time to check it out in depth. .

thanks for the advice so far. .

I have the Mackie Control. It's not noisy.

Fader control is excellent. The panning knobs and Faders are instantly programmable for plug in parameter control.

Great for riding vocals and recording automation.

Punch in / out and solo / mute: Not so good.

Too much latency versus a real board. (At least in OS X.4)

Why not the BCF2000. Pretty cheap and works like a charm in Mackie emulation mode... All you need for your basic mixing needs.

You can buy mine, if you want...

Hey Jesquick,

I was looking at that thing. They have got motorised faders right?

how does it work mapping stuff to it, is it easy?

Can i click on somehting, fader, pot, soft synth parameter etc and have it control it? Do i have to map everything first?

For the prices you're talking about, I HAVE to throw my $.02 in for the Lemur. Seriously, consider it.

Hey Sparkle,

Thanks, am looking for motorised faders though, tactile and feedback stuff.

Am liking the takeover control thing of the Euphonix and Mackie Control.

@ Rave, I was asking you cos they dont support ableton or list it on their site. so, as someone who uses it regularly I figured you can give me better insight than the marketing materials. . .

Tascam us 2400 looks great to me. 24 faders! seem to be very rare these days.

Yeah, the tascam thing looks interesting although possibly it's on it's way out. .

Ok, so rave, i am checking out the videos for the Euphonix, but it's all Logic which was why i was asking you about how it works with live.

Does it work in the same way as in the video? i.e. can i use it to load up a plug without using a mouse, then edit parameters?

Sorry to keep bugging you about it but you are the only source of info, they dont sem to support live so I am curious abou how it woks. I tried phoning them today and they weren't ery much cop, the guy i spoke to didn't know much about ableton :(

From your earlier post it seems that you are just using it for the flying faders. . .

I am also wondering how it would integrate with 3rd party plugs, I use Sonalksis and the URS channel strip pro for eq. Am thinking that the mackie might be a better option for integration. . . Off to try and find more info. . ..

PS thanks for the advice so far, much appreciated. .

I tried different kind of controllers since Live 3 !
The first one was a Digidesign R1 MIDI controller, without any possibility of MIDI assignement (only on Channel 1, every knobs are assigned on the basic MIDI implementation chart) : it was great because the faders were 100 mm long and it's rock-solid ! But you have to plug a power supply and there's no USB port ! Maybe one day, I have to circuit-bend it (if anyone have suggestions, or anything about this possibility)
After that, I used a UC17 which is great for Live gigs (especially as DJ-styled behaviors) but less controls as expected.
Then, a Oxygen 8 (great also) and a Alesis Photon 25 (great knobs but no MIDI output available on Mac)
I used once a BCR2000 that crashes my Mac all the time so I sold it on the web. Since then, I'm a bit angry about Behringer's devices...
And then, I like my Bitstream 3x (but it's pretty hard to program) because it's rock-solid, plenty of knobs and faders, features like arpegiator or MIDI LFO, a joystick... Just Great !
And the last one : a MPD24 just for drums and keyboard features... Not bad.
If you're looking for something cheap and practical, have a look on Ebay on Novation K-Station (yeah : it's a synth) as both sound generator and pretty good MIDI controller. I tried it in my studio and it works so well...

check out bcf mackie videos on youtube before spending loads of cash on that euphonix, which does pretty much the same thing.

except for the lcd internal feedback ofc...
