Stereo Spreeeaaaaad . . . .

Post by Parametex » Tue Feb 10, 2009 2:30 pm

Anybody got good practices in creating good (read expensive) sounding wide stereo effects with particular plugins? Whats your favourites?

- There Lives utility but thats simply cancelling the center.
- Ozone is pretty ok, yet a little bit harsh sounding
- Waves suffler - muddy ...
- ???

I' ve been using Ozone's enhancer quite a bit lately. It can be harsh, but I correct that with some EQ before and after Ozone.

Waves doubler can also be useful, but not as intuitive as OZone.

Use modified sounds and pan them to left and right plus some track delay.

This can be done either by altering the sound in the sythesizer or simply record audio data twice (a common pratice for vocals).

Be sure to check mono compatibility in the end....

+1 on separate processing. i've gotten great separation using grain delay (extremely short delay times 100% wet) and slightly different eq on each track (l/r).

Yeah and of course you shoudn't forget the simple yet powerful trick of EQing left and right a bit differently ...

Voxengo make a free 'Sound Delay' Plugin that I've been using recently . You can time the stereo delays by 32ms, 64ms, etc. It may be help. I know its on OSX, not sure about Windows.

m/s eq8 makes the sound rather dull when i use it... on the other hand L/R mode works great. any suggestions?

What OS are you on?

Look up Mid/side processing. There's good ones for both mac & PC.

just drench everything in reverb and delay and chorus! rock!
It was as if someone shook up a 6 foot can of blood soda and suddenly popped the top.

i have tried many many tools for spread audio and always not find what i would. someone introduce artifacts, some other color the bass etc.

the best way to add some good and not excessive (remember always mono-comp) is using the 8 eq in M/S mode.

just pumpin in the high frequencies (cose the spread is in this range and never in the bass freq) of the side give me a little but great effect of more stereo.
i make this with two of eight point of eq avaible.

usually, i add 1,5/3db of eq at 2/4khz and another 4,5/6db at 8/10khz, bells 2/3
it depends on the material.

but this is the best way for my ears to add some space at the track.

cheers

I was never 100% sure but I had guessed it was the enhancer. What kind of eq corrections do you do? BTW where do you apply the enhancer (on individual channels or on the master) ?
I use it on leads and sometime Background vocals. The plug is quite user friendly with four frequency zones to tweak. Depending on the material, I will widen low mids, mids, or hi's. (I always keep the lows narrow).

I, personally, would never use it in the master buss.
