vinyl vs cds... better yet turntables vs ableton

i dont want to start this discussion. my question is.... do we still see this argument? i havnt seen it in a while.

i think we know whats winning.... the next debate should be.... how quickly can you get rid of your vinyl and turntables before the market floods?

im selling mine for an apc40.... my mate said it best....

"sell two decks and get 16 new decks"

I am firmly ingrained in the digital domain, but one bit of kit I will NEVER sell is my 1200s. That would be very foolish.

I wish I could sell my turntables, but I look at the stupid amount of 12" I have and think how much I spent on it all, then look at the turntables with legs missing, on/off caps fallen off, beer stains and so on.

I think for what i'd get for them and what I'd loose it'd be a poor deal on my end.

Very much digital here, but order of preference is my SL1210s, CDJ-1000s then digital (Traktor Pro+VCI-100 and Live).

i see no use for my 1210's. if i really needed a vinyl turntable i would shell out 50 quid for one of those vinyl to usb jobs out of iwoot

i sence some relucktance to let go here. im wife likes my 1210's for what i fear is an astetic value.

Never ever get rid of vinyl turntables. Everything about it has become vintage and there are many great tracks out there that can only be had through vinyl.

With that said, I welcome our new digital overlords! :-p

Fair enough- but don't you think a more interesting approach would be to consider the merits of Live vs. turntables? And to my mind, a CDJ is much closer to a turntable than to Live. I don't think there's a one to one equivalence between the options. Sure, you can emulate 16 turntables in Live simultaneously. How's that gonna work at 3:30 in the morning, when the party is going crazy and you are searching for just the right breakdown to fit the vibe? Live works great when you have your clips loaded and ready to go ahead of time, all your ducks in a row so to speak. Less so when you have to mouse around to load your clips and effects on stage....right? A lot of the time, DJs need flexibility, dependability, and good organization more than all the tracks you can shake a stick at. Live doesn't change that.

i removed myself from vinyl. Im busy recording all my vinyl in prep to sell it all. and loads are fuzzy sounding some have skips... my record bag weighd in at 16 kilios.

so cd turntables vs live. they are either a different format or part of the same set up.

I think ableton is more of a facilitator than something to be compared.

I read this, and compose my reply, while going through a stack of Mo Wax 12"s, old hip hop and random other vinyl bits and pieces I picked up earlier this week.

The thought of people digitising and getting rid of their records makes me sad. It is not something I could do myself.

If the tools, techniques and creative possibilities of exclusively-digital djing suit you best, great, go for it.

But records are not just dj tools, and they are more than just the music that's on them.

The music you play, create and, I assume, love, would not exist were it not for the medium itself - the medium you're talking about 'removing yourself' from.

Remove yourself from your records, and you're removing yourself from the history, heart and soul of the music you're trying to create.

I would venture that your music, if not your life, will be poorer for it.

Still doin fine here with vinyl, my little label has sold more and more vinyl units past couple years. I'm actually making money!!! The numbers show vinyl doing better than it has in years, both from labels and manufacturers

I would never sell my 1200's

I need to get the little light replaced which will probably cost more than upgrading to Live 8 - but that's not the point

There's something about turntables and vinyl - those who feel it, know what I'm talking about

it's a very real tangible feeling and connection between you, the music, and technology - I love it
