Re: Mastering....
yeah... DON'T!
No matter what any plugin seller says, you and your DAW are NOT equipped to handle Mastering! Izotope and the Waves plugs are really good for trying it out. But when I want to release something, I'd get it done by a good Mastering Engineer. They have equipment, ears, and setups that outperform anything we could possibly have in a home setup.
Besides, most home people think mastering is just making their shitty songs loud. which is one reason why the world has been flooded with crappy Izotope preset masters.
But if I were to give you some tips for mastering:
1. Make sure your mix is good before you master! <-- most important
2. Master conservatively. Don't use shit unless you really need it. (especially multiband compressors and exciters)
3. Stop squashing the shit out of everything! C'mon I really miss dynamic range, guys.

Re: Mastering....
Mastering is mainly use if you have a vinyl and/or cd distribution.
For Digital Distribution, a good mixing is enough.

Re: Mastering....
since we're in tips and tricks, i use ozone, and have the output set to -0.1dB on it...
my question is - if i leave the master volume at 0.0dB will that be safe in the matter of eliminating peaks?
the only reason i ask is that is how i had it set for tracktion 3 before i bought live... thanks everyone ahead of time
(still a noob)

Re: Mastering....
doing that keeps the ceiling of ozone below that of the clipping point. well, at least on ableton's meters. anytime it goes red, its bad.
Re: Mastering....
haha i know that, silly...
but it seems if i have the master to 0.0 on live, does that mean it will in theory output to -0.1dB if i had ozone run out to that with its limiter? I had it set for that but it kept going red on me... suggestions?

Re: Mastering....
that means you are letting some transients through. speed up your attack time on your compressor/limiter.
and yes, that means it will go to .1
