[amo] Vocoder - Self-Vocoding Oddness

Post by ibbur » Sat Jan 24, 2009 12:35 am

This was posted in the Beta Discussion...not certain that was the appropriate place to post.

When the Vocoder is set for self-vocoding (Carrier set to Modulator) while audio is set to Ext. In, and you rapidly adjust the Depth control counter-clockwise, all bands spike and the device lets out a percussive sound with each increment. The volume of the spike, both audibly and graphically, is dependant on the speed the Depth control is turned.

Is that normal?

Hi,

I don't get this part: if Carrier is set to Modulator, there is no audio IN to set? Can you explain again what you are doing to get this behaviour?

Sure.

Audio Track

- Audio from Ext In
- Monitor set to IN* (AUTO and OFF negates this behavior)
- Vocoder dropped in as effect, Carrier set to Modulator**
- Grab the Depth knob and rotate quickly anti-clockwise

Result...all bands will uniformly respond. A clipping-type noise will emit for a fraction of a second.

In Beta 8.02b this behavior was the most pronounced and each instance would drive all bands to the limit and distort. It would show profoundly in the level meters as well. In subsequent releases the behavior is still there but not nearly as disruptive, barely shows on the meters, and only comes through the monitors is at high volume.

* IN is a USB A/D coverter driven by ASIO4ALL - doesn't matter what's hooked up to it, if anything
**Enhanced Mode enabled increases the behavior

Hi,

Is that still an issue with the latest betas?

Just checked it out with 8.0b26 and would have to say the issue appears to have been resolved. The behavior seemed to come from rapidly adjusting the Depth from 200% to zero. This immediately accentuates the line level noise, which seems expected and normal but does not spike how it did previously. The issue before with the loud distorted percussive noise is no longer present. Thanks!
