"Not Again" you say...Laptop Hard Drives.. an update request

Post by starving student » Mon Jan 10, 2005 9:32 pm

I've been lurking in the harddrive threads and adam jay and a few others seem to have the laptop hard drive issue cornered, I just want to know now that people have had the 16mb cache drives and the 7200rpm drives for a minute now, what is the current concensus?
are most folks going with the 16mb/5400 or the the 8mb/7200 configuration?, or has something else arisen that I should be looking at, last but not least external or internal???
any good deals or brand preffs out there?

currently, i have a 5400rpm/8mb cache 80GB Fujitsu.
Read speeds = same as 7200rpm/8mb cache internal 2.5" HD
Write speeds = about 15% slower than 7200rpm/8mb cache internal 2.5" HD
with the 16MB 5400, you could expect more like 5% slower write speeds.

something interesting here for you - i did a test with my 7200rpm/8mb cache FIREWIRE 3.5" HD the other day.
Here is how my 5400rpm/8mb Internal 2.5" compared.
Write Speeds = Almost exactly equal
Read Speeds = the Internal 5400rpm was 50% FASTER!

My recomendation is the Seagate 100GB 5400rpm/8mb HD
Newegg has it for $181 Shipped (awesome deal)

will that drive recommendation work in a powerbook?

I really like the idea of upping HD speed (which I desperatley need) and capacity!

Thanx!
