Why is Ableton Live 8 so CPU Intensive?

Post by singer.arnab » Sun Apr 05, 2009 1:26 pm

I just downloaded the demo version of Live 8 and found it to be rather CPU Intensive. I am using an AMD 3500+/4GB RAM and M-Audio Fast Track Pro USB 2.0 Audio Interface(256 Samples).

Do I need to change/upgrade my audio interface?

I also found it rather annoying that in order to acess all my VST's I required to change the custom plugin folder in the preferences from C:\ to D:\ back and forth[yes, I have loads of VSTs :D ].

In other softwares like SONAR,NUENDO etc. you can simply keep on adding locations,i.e.,
C:\Program Files\Steinberg\Vstplugins + D:\Program Files\Steinberg\Vstplugins,
the software scans all the vst's stored in your computer and makes them available for use.

Will this issue be fixed in the form of an update? Else,I would rather not invest on Live 8.

It's hard to know whether Live's cpu usage is reasonable because you haven't said anything about how much it's actually using, or under what conditions -- you've just said that it's using more than you would like. That might mean that there is something wrong with Live, or it might mean that your desires are unrealistic. So could you supply more detail?

Meanwhile, your VST problem is easy to solve: Put a shortcut in one of your VST plugin folders that refers to the other one. Alternatively, create a third folder that contains nothing but shortcuts that refer to the other two, and tell Live that that third folder is where your VST plugins are.

I am talking about the Live Sets which contains the Lessons.

p.s. thanks for solving the vst problem :)

Tried your idea.It worked out,yes...but Live took 9 minutes to startup(it almost scanned my brains along with the VST plugins)! What say to that ???

I am running Sonar 7/Reason 4/Nuendo 3 and it gives me absolutely no problem. If I need to upgrade my machine for Live 8 then it will be too much of an investment. I would rather stick to Live 7.

One thing you want to check is your power plan CPU configuration. You want to make sure that when it's plugged in (not on battery) that you are using 100% of your CPU, I have found that it is the one configuration tweak that can make things much smoother.
