Ableton Live 8 Running horribly slow on Mac Pro 8 Core

Post by STERIO » Fri Apr 03, 2009 12:56 am

I Just upgraded to Ableton Live 8 about 25 min ago. Before I got to loading one of my old Live 7 sessions I had been working on, I noticed how slow ableton was performing. CPU is 3x higher then normally in Live 7, and everything is running horribly slow; Tabbing between Session and Arrangement view, loading/deleting tracks, visual representation of audio levels render slowly on screen, etc. I even deleted the session down to two tracks to see how it performs and nothing changes. Poop!

Mac Pro: 8 Core 3.0GHz, 10GB of Ram, OSX 10.5.6

Please help Ableton. For now, I will be reverting back to Ableton Live 7

I'm seeing this as well on a Macbook Pro 1.83ghz with 2gb of Ram.
The volume meters are ridiculously slow, scrolling through instruments and effects is very slow as well.
It almost feels like i'm running the beta or a debug build.

Ableton Please investigate. This perf is killing me.
As a side note, live 7 continues to run like a champ.

Per Nico's advice my issues were resolved by upgrading from OSX 10.5.4 to 10.5.6.

Ableton thanks for the swift and helpful response.

I'm on a MacBook 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, running Mac OS 10.5.6 and have exactly the same problem. The GUI responds really slow and everything seems to run at a screen refresh rate of 10 frames per second.
Any tips on what to do besides updating Mac OS?

+1

My (osx-10.5.6) 8core mac pro with 6 gigs of ram is running live 8 incredibly slow.
Anything from moving a track to triggering a new clip in a clip slot causes it to stall and hiccup.
For the most part the sound plays un interrupted while the program drags along but there is the occasional audible gitch and hiccup.
The new features in v8 are stellar for producing with but At this point it would be useless for playing out with.
I hope this gets fixed quickstyle.

Almost every term in that article is completely foreign to me.
I'm all about geeking out but I'd much prefer ableton to fix their software instead.

+1. CPU usage on the same sets (without anything changed) is generally 2x-3x higher than in live 6 or live 7.
we shouldnt have to go hacking our processors to get L8 to run as fast as 7.

You shouldn't have to do an OS hack to get your processor to run at the speed it's designed to run at, period. One of Apple's more questionable moves...

The point I'm raising though is that with any kind of CPU load increase (even a very minor one- say 2-3%), what you're describing could be happening; Windows will do the same thing if you don't turn off speedstepping. The difference is that on a Windows box, you don't have to hack the OS to do so.

Hi, I've got exactly the same problem with Live 8, the interesting thing is it only seems to run really slowly when I've got Live stretched across more than one screen. As soon as I resize the window onto a single screen it runs perfectly. Live 7 runs fine regardless of how many screens are used.

Anyone else noticed this?

Yes. I'm running live 8 on a macbook 2.0ghz with 4gb of ram and the user interface slows down to about 5-10 fps when I have live maximized on a 24" external monitor. If I have live in a same sized window as it would be on the macbook's own display, it runs just fine. Could it be that this introduction of GUI scaling has broken something.. dunno..

Could any of the Ableton officials post a reaction on this please?

+1

MBP 2.4 GHz, 4GB Ram

MP 2 X 2.8 QuadCore, 2GB Ram

On both machines live 8 is too slow.
from my XPrience, I guess Ableton wont leave us hanging for too long.

for now, BK to L7 :)

just updated to live 8 a week ago and im using a Macpro 2.8 Ghz and 8GB RAM. My soundcard is the Edirol Fa-101 configured to 96 Khz as a sample rate. The only VST I am using is Sylenth (which should not suck up so much CPU load)
It works fine but when I add say 6 MIDI tracks with Sylenth1 on them....CPU usage becomes up to 50 % ??!!
When I bought my Macpro i thought it would be perfect with music production! So what is the deal here??

Thanks
