is there any way to mix live with a friend over the internet

Post by Taiden » Mon Apr 20, 2009 3:34 am

A friend of mine and I want to mix together this coming summer, but for the moment we are separated by about 1000 miles. Is there any way for us to sync our ableton Lives over the internet and mix with each other?

He's on Live 6 and I'm on Live 7, we're both using Mac OS X 10.5.6 (Leopard).

I know how to link two mac's tempos together side by side with Audio MIDI Setup.

Even if we can't do that, it would be cool to at least be able to stream audio to each other with lowish latency.

i know there is a specific object for midi over a network in osx in the audio/midi setup window (forget exactly where it is but you can spotlight "audio midi" and should come up). that's about as far as i can take you though.

as far as I know, NINJAM is only thing that can currently deal with the latencies of playing over the net. You dont play in real time, but normally 16 bars behind each other. It works quite well, and its free check it out.

well we got our lives to sync up but we're trying to work out audio

Ninjam looks awesome! Is there a way to pipe Live into Ninjam? For now it just says that it takes hardware inputs (built in MIC and line in)

please go to that link.

it is a great plug and works great. also transmits video into your daw. very neat. latency is not an issue as it syncs your daws together.

Ive only used NINJAM in REAPER. You can put it as a plugin over the main output, or use it on send/return channels if you want control over what goes out to ninjam. Not sure if there is a way to run it in Live, but you can rewire Live to Reaper.

get soundflower from cycling 74. its a loopback for audio that represents itself between programs as hardware inputs and outputs.

if you get reaper and install rearoute that comes with it (check under additional stuffs when installing) you can send audio from live to rearoute of a total of 256 channels if needed,t hen you can have reaper to capture these channels and send them to ninjam.

ive done it and it works perfectly and its ver easy to setup aswell.

heres you go: http://www.cockos.com/wiki/index.php/Us ... via_REAPER
