i've been abstinent for 4 years now, and i find that the lack of relationship-drama and wasted time & meaning are very beneficial for creative endeavours. i still spank the poodle, so to speak, but i find that much less harmful than engaging in a relationship thats less than ideal. The way i see it, it doesn't happen until it happens, so why fuck around with less than what i truly want? I just channel it into things i know will last....music, health, real relationships, the life of the Spirit. Strange that the urge comes on strongest just when i really get into the flow of creation... some connection?
anyways, where's that soulmate of mine?!?

yeah ! salvador dali used to say that "art is in the balls", this means that most of the artistic pulsions come from unsatisfied sexual desire

but anyway, a girlfriend who loves bassdrum is good too

Just curious:
Those who think that abstinence makes more creative, what kind of music do you make???? gregorian? tibetan throat singing? abstract ambient atmospheric soundscapes? minimal techno? IDM?
There is a whole "zen-ish" part of the music that is about comtemplation, elevation of the mind... Maybe you are some kinda techno-priests????
Yaawwwllll ZZZzzzzzzzzzz ;)

Ok, kidding, I respect that but as for myself I will never restrict myself on sex to be more inspired. I like it more... visceral

I do agree that the pain of feeling isolated and "different" feeds creativity. But isn't it a bit too "information age" and post-modern to SELF-CONSCIENTLY search for abstinence to be more creative?

Ha!

TRicky subject, have seen discussions on this before... I don't even want to imagine discussing it with my girlfriend! (getting time for music without hard feelings is hard enough!)

But I think its true, when I wasnt in a relationship I had not just more time but more focused creative energy for music.

Word. It works much the same for me. The problem is that "what you truely want" would need to be recognised for what it is. Trying to do that might still get you into a fair amount of time (and energy!) consuming drama. I also tend to end up in a fair amount of realy surreal discussion because of this additude.

As a added bonus you get to read the "computer Muisc Tutorial" in bed, then sleep next to it. Surely that´s one of the best things about being a mad scientist!

I've been known to mix in quite a bit of tibetan throat-singing, actually! Good call! Usually, though, i mix in some porn with it and a pounding savage bassline ;) For me, i'm not abstinent because it makes me more creative, but it is an intereting by-product of the decision. As much as anything, it generates a tremendous amount of tension that must be dealt with in some way.

Wow Forge! Now that's talent. how do you make it sing? Is it all in the upstroke or down?

Actually, I think it's detrimental to 'computer' music making in so far as picking the crust off your keyboard can be a bit of a distraction.

Arm shake can be good for inputting buzz rolls though.

It's well documented in medical circles that masturbation retards the graying of hair(of the head that is). Increased levels of testosterone leads to more melanin production, hence blacker hair. Interestingly, real sex doesn't seem to have the same effect though. :? I read it in the BMJ.

[Marvin] Gaye was partial to protracted bouts of masturbation to rid him of sexual tension and to help achieve a suitably relaxed ambience.
I remembered a friend mentioning this once, and this thread reminded me of it.
