I tell my boss I had your OK, shouldn't be a problem. I'll tell him you're a stock car racer or something.

I put cinder blocks on my monitors for heavy compression.

that's why hip hop beats sound better with a tight hat on, it's the African roots in the music.

okay. here comes the serious answer.

Take a vocal loop and try it out. Throw a Compressor in the track and play with those Parameters:

Threshold,Ratio,Attack,Decay.

Threshold:
Defines how loud a signal needs to be for compression to start.

Ratio:
Defines how much the signal gets compressed when it is above the threshold

Attack/Decay:
Defines how long it takes for the compressor to start compressing / to recover after the signal got over the threshold.

Gain Reduction meter:
Tells you how much the compressor actually does.

If you played long enough with those parameters and a vocal loop, you'll get an idea of what it does. For vocals the next step you would want to try is using the side chain EQ in Compressor to only compress the signal if there is loud high frequencies in your vocals. This can smooth the sound nicely. For compression there is only one real rule: try out, gain experience....

pic fixed.

what would you sidechain the high end of the vocals to? as in, you sidechain the kick into the bass' compressor that that tight low end sound.

not really side chain. side chain to self with the EQ active. should more called colored compression (tm).
idea: if you boost the highs / high mids in the control path, the compressor will be more sensitive to that freq. range. i think this makes sense. no?

crazy, I never thought of sidechaining a signal to itself. I guess the attack and release settings could help with feedback type issues?

as my boss for the day, can you send me home early so I can go try this?

Der XY Instruments,

your engineer Tone Deft does not want to stay any longer in his cubicle. Please let him free for today!! He will go to the Prague or hike to Amsterdam and have a beer. His doc is fine with that.
