which sampler has nastier sounding filters and just an overall better coloring for drums and bass sounds?

The S950's low-pass filter doesn't have resonance, or any other filter types.

If it's sound mangling you're after the S950 has a certain sound: it adds a crapload of high end at the input stage when sampling which is good for drums etc, but the filter itself is bland being just low-pass without resonance.

I would suggest getting an Akai S2800 / 3000 / 3200 which have WICKED filters, really fat and warm. Excellent for bass. The built-in FX board on the 3200 (and optional on the other models) is excellent too: 2 discrete chains of RingMod/Distortion > 3-band Parametric EQ > FreqMod/Chorus/Phaser > DDL > Reverb plus two additional discrete reverbs. I have a 3200 and it's still one of my favourite "synths". You probably would be able to find one of the later models for not a great deal more than the S950.

Can't speak for the EPS

The S950 will sample at up to 48kHz sample rate.

A good write-up here: http://emusician.com/signalprocessors/emusic_akai/

if it's the eps 16+ I'd go with that.

S3000XL - my all-time favorite sampler. It really is the business! Nice 'standard' feature set, and you can get some sick filters with the EB effects board.

Both have no resonance in the filters but the EPS + has lp hp and bp & very good effekts. there is a special effekt disc that emulates a moog style lp filter with res. that is great.

overall the s 950 is simple to use and has a very good and distinct 12 bit sound. it is perfect for sample choping a la premier, pete rock etc...
the ensoniq is much more of a sampler/synthesizer with alot of editing posibilities and great effekts. it is the one for mangeling. el-p used it extensivly and jan jelinek did his first album on the eps + or the asr (witch is the same sing with more ram and 16 bit converters).

cheers

i made my decision and i ended up getting the eps classic with the 4x memory expansion (for about 140) and i just sample kicks all the way down to 6.25khz, while i throw everything else in the 16-18khz range...It gets grimey and i just record the sounds into the computer again to later be used in the drum racks.
