Rediscovering a band years after you first heard it

So I kept up with all the pubs hailing Doves as this great band. I bought their records. Couldn't get past the vocals, didn't get the music, just didn't care for it. Couldn't see what all the big deal was.

Not sure why or how, but suddenly, I was going through my old collections of stuff I hadn't heard in a while and started listening to them. MAN, I GET IT! This band is f-ing outstanding. The textures, guitars, drums...there's a bizarre detachment to the vocals that I now suddenly understand...

In 1997 I first heard this rather obscure band that had been getting a bunch of rave reviews in the metal press called Neurosis. Heard one song and just didn't get it...now I realize that I was just too immature to handle something of this magnitude of artistic achievment. My favorite band today since I rediscovered them a couple of years ago.

I got Talking Heads "Stop Making Sense" at a garage sale (because it had that one song "Burning Down the House" that I knew) and it sat in my cd book for at least a decade without a listen. Needless to say I now love the Talking Heads.

It's happened with a lot of other bands as well (Phish, Ween). Sometimes you're just not ready, I guess.

Always wanted to check out more of their older stuff, but the only one I have by the Doves is "The Last Broadcast". I bought it a few years ago, I "got it", enjoyed it, just forgot about it.

Perhaps I will throw it on the iPod and rediscover it!

Stereolab was a big one for me though. Had heard them years ago, lots of friends liked them, but I just didn't get it. Then about a year or so it hit me like a ton of bricks. Now I love them and have almost everything they've ever done.

Right now I'm rediscovering Pavement for the third time.

ps. you'll know you're getting old when you discover music, then years later you rediscover it, then years after that you rediscover it again....

that happened to me with the Grateful Dead, wasn't interested heard them quite a bit and hated it...

...then i got a free ticket to a show...

ended up dropping everything and going on summer tour the following two years..
to this day i love 'em.

the feelings i get when i listen to the boys. I've seen their various side projects countless times over the last 14 years.. love it.

i can always throw the dead in and feel good.

I loved the Doves "Lost Souls" album - the drumming was perfect, what really locked me into them.

One band I had to rediscover was Boards of Canada, and I wish I had been listening to them the entire time I had their Geogaddi CD in my collection...listened to it three years ago for the first time since 2003, and it's made it into the rotation at least once every couple of weeks since then - I bought everything else of theirs I could find after that, and it sincerely helps me finish my homework.

Honey's dead. The Jesus and Mary Chain.
Not there best, but i toured as the chef with them during this period.
I got so over it all that i went off on a free jazz/Mingus/Pharaoh saunders bent.
I re-discovered the record buried deep in a box a couple of months back when the My Bloody Valentine
Loveless remaster came out and it all came flooding back.
Been listening to second coming by the stone roses as well...

this is so awesome because i totally heard korn's "blind" on the radio today. I used to think it was cool to like korn and metal in general back when i was a younger man (boy).

this recording sounds SO terrible, like a high school band demo.

i LOVE listening to old stuff from when i was a kid, now that my musical perception exists. I used to watch the teenage mutant ninja turtles cartoon show, and when i heard the theme song i was like, "this is NUTS"

it's this major/minor chromatic descending part in C that really took the cake, but when i was younger, i had no idea what i was hearing.

New Order. Bought a best of back in 94. Liked it for a few weeks, but went back to my staple diet of indie rock.

Returned to it in 2001 and was totally blown away. Ended up a rabid fan.

How many of these rediscoveries are down to changing musical tastes. I went from hard rock, to alternative, to indie, and finally discovered music with synths. It was like a re-awakening.
