simple, stupid question

Post by xian » Fri Jan 21, 2005 5:05 pm

i'm running an mbox with Live on a 1ghz pwerbook w/ 1 gig ram. I get the oft spoken of annoying 'glitches' with recording & playback when the cpu is only at around 60-70%. I kind of hate the mbox at this point due to latency issues, although the pre-amps are nice. so - i'm just wondering - if i were to ditch this and get a firewire interface would my problems be solved or am i likely to face similar issues? at this point I only use the mbox now for recording instruments & play out thru the core audio drivers.

thanks for any & all advice.

x

try loading your clips into ram once the cpu gets to 60-70%, or at least when you expect it to, this may or may not fix the issue.

thanks for the response & sorry to be a retard but can you clarify 'loading the clips into ram'? do you mean storing the recorded audio onto my hard drive & accesing it as a 'clip'? thanks.

okay perhaps i misunderstood your question. so lets clarify.

are you trying to record audio whilst other audio is being played back from Ableton Live?

or are you just trying to simply record into Live two channels, and this is giving you 60-70% CPU and glitches, with nothing else going on in Live?

yes, multitracking - recording whilst other audio is simultaneously playing back. thanks - x

Setting all of your clips to Ram Mode (so that they are played back from RAM instead of hard drive) will reduce the amount of work your CPU needs to do.

yea exactly...
in all the other clips of audio that are playing back. theres a "RAM" button you can click. do this and it will allow the audio to be streamed from RAM rather than the hard disk. putting all the playback clips in RAM frees up your hard disk for the recording. this should get rid of your glitches, if that doesnt work, try increasing the input buffer.
