Free Sounds
Anyone know a good place to get free sound files? Many sites say they are free when they are not.

What do you mean by "free sounds". If you mean hits or loops, try Future Music/Computer Music. Not free, but for $14.99 you get a great magazine and they have loop/hit DVD's, some freeware, and lots of trial software. Computer Music has a whole studio of free software instruments every month including stripped down versions of some good synths & effects. Also try just searching for Free Live Packs, I found Beatmaker Drum Racks that way. Also there's Planet Drum Machine's demo, it has about 6 or 8 kits free. Pure Magnetik has some great free Artist kits, and a subscription is $5.75 but the older stuff is $12 each however you can't go wrong with their stuff. I love their Mellotron and Vintage organs. I stopped there but it goes on.
You can download a few free samplers such as UVI Workstation or Kore Player, they come with some sounds.
If you're talking about instruments, there is a ton of freeware out there! VSTCafe or Macmusic.org are 2 sites I've used to find things, as well as this forum. I recommend the TAL synths (nice analog models) and their Tilt EQ. I also found Colour EQ and IIEQPro and a lot of cool effects that way. Look around if you haven't already, there's a lot of freeware. You could always try making your own sounds/hits as well.
Good old Ableton Live has great sounds too, so you might consider saving up for an upgrade or whatever.
