Any saw wave with a distortion plug-in (Saturator or Dynamic tube)I would have thought. Use a low pass filter to cut out the high "wasp" like elements.

do the sawtooth thing. but cut out sub 300hz. then add a sine wave that covers 300hz and lower. fat bass yo.
Re: creating tech-house bass
Do as the previous posters have said. Also, you can try duplicating the track, bump it up an octave, tweak it with some effects, then bring down the volume in the mix. this often gives a really nice full sound.(you could duplicate it as many times as you want, add weird effects, lower them in the mix, and get some really cool/fat sounds from the layering).rabblebasics wrote:what ableton instrument/effects should i use to create a thick benny benassi/digitalism kind of thick tech bass. should i use analaog with filters and ad some bass effects? any help would be greatly appreciated.

Wow. That's why I love this community.
Re: creating tech-house bass
Separating the bass into low and mid/high as suggested above can work well, especially considering that you can apply various effects to the mid/upper end of the bass (e.g. LFO on the cut-off, a phaser, etc.) to give it a bit of movement and life.
