Do you need it? No.
Might you want it? Depends what you want to achieve.

Re: Do I need recycle if I have Live
Hi - yes - the need to define my thoughts - I enjoy Live as well as several other DAWs - I have jumped into Reason as a means to build walls of sound with little CPU cost...I wish to experimemt with rex files...I caught a statememt..somewhere...that live could do what recycle does...now this is an area of Live I've never played in...so I though to ask ...or at least I attempted to ask this
in terms of cutting up loops to create rex files to play in reason (and other DAWs) 'Do I need recycle if I have Live'

Live can't create REX files so if you need to do that, yes.

isn't slice to midi basically doing the same thing as a rex file?

If you're only using sliced loops in live recycle is more or less useless. However you can't define a sensibility transients treshold ine live, you can in recycle.

Except if you change the tempo you are screwed because the slices are locked at the original tempobosonHavoc wrote:isn't slice to midi basically doing the same thing as a rex file?

Only recycle can generate REX files.
If this is your goal, then you will need Recycle.

If you go and rent the "Jurrassic Park" DVD at some stage there is a T-REX, but this is not the same thing.
Re: Do I need recycle if I have Live
if you wish to HEAR what you are slicing then yes, you need recycle.

What?
that's how recycle works too. The slices aren't changed, their position in the measure is what allows the tempo to be changed.
slice to midi does basically the same thing that recycle does, but can't create rex files.

OH. Well, this is one thing in Live that I feel they missed the mark with: timestretching in simpler/sampler and/or drum racks - it would make Live a total beast for sample based production.

Recycle is the gift that keeps on giving IMO.
