Guitar players. what foot controller for Ableton Live?

Post by memyselfandus » Sat May 30, 2009 7:17 pm

what foot controller do you use for switching scenes live in
live while recording guitar tracks?

I want to switch on the fly, my drum grooves while recording
guitar tracks.

FCB 1010

Seriously, the one thing Berhinger did right. Most other Guitar pedal boards don't let you select MIDI notes.

I want to control multiple vst tracks and also go between "slots" on any track
so I can trigger multiple grooves from 1 or more drum vsts. can this do that?
If I can do this I am buying one.

I cant recommend this foot controller enough.
I made one and it cost me £5! Music doesn't not have to be expensive!

My top row controls scenes,

My bottom row records loops. Using autohotkey each button on the bottom row with each press does the following:
1. Arms the corresponding track and disarms others.
2. Starts recording
3. Stops Recording

This makes it far more malleable than a very expensive controller! The possibilities ARE endless!

What about triggering/controlling "slots" within scenes?

The slots you control depend on how you map them to your keyboard.
So you really need to know what slots you want to record into first then map your keyboard appropriately.

Perfect, yea I would just be making variations of the same type of rhythms
in each slot in a scene and control/trigger/play them while recording guitar.

if you don't care about having expression pedals (like me) then I would HIGHLY suggest a rolls midibuddy. It has the same amount of buttons as the FCB 1010, but it's way more compact and portable. You will, however, need a 3rd party midi translation app like midipipe, bomes, etc. to convert the Program Change messages that it sends out to notes, cc's or keystrokes for live. But even most people using the FCB seem to also be using midi translators for various uses, so it's no big deal.

I use mine with MIDI stroke, 10 buttons mapped to up, down, left, right, undo, delete, enter (launch clip or scene), stop all clips and a couple of individual stop buttons for the two live guitar loop inputs. and that's just one bank of 10 buttons, the other 12 banks are unused at this point, so you can see the possibilities are pretty big.

OH yeah and I got mine for 50 bucks on ebay. Not bad!

cheap, easy and cool. MY concern would be, that since I'm a bit of a lead-foot, I would probably break that shit within a couple of gigs. Not so bad in my home town, but on the road it would be a huge worry for me....
