Trying to find best sound card for using Guitar Rig in Live

Post by dave247 » Wed Jul 01, 2009 7:47 pm

I want to use Reason 4 and Guitar Rig 3 within Live as VST plug-ins but I have no sound card, just onboard sound. There is like 187 ms of latency and I want to get that as low as possible.

I run latest version of Live on Vista 32-bit system with i7 Quad core CPU and plenty of ram. Would a sound card me the best fix for this latency?

I need some sound card suggestions (not Soundblaster of course).

I saw this: http://pro-audio.musiciansfriend.com/pr ... 701346#new but I really dont need the input hardware since I am recording guitar through Guitar Rig's VST Plug-in through Live

any help is appreciated

yes, an audio interface would most likely be the solution to your problem. what kind of computer do you have? custom built or store bought? do you know what firewire chipset the motherboard has? what expansion slots do you have open?

Then you're looking to have relatively high latency.

Also I'm confused as to what you mean when you say you don't need the "input hardware" on the M-Audio. You have to have an input if you're hoping to run a guitar through GT3, so...?

I have a custom built pc I made a few months ago: Intel i7 quad core cpu with an EVGA X58 motherboard. It has Firewire 1394A

I have some PCIE slots open as well as two PCI slots. So I would go with a PCIE sound card.

No I will be playing my guitar through the USB device that connects to my computer that works with Guitar Rig. There is no latency when I do that. The latency comes when I open up Live and add the Guitar Rig 3 VST plug-in to my guitar track. I am NOT directly recording the output from a 1/4 inch jack.

well if you're wanting to go the PCIe card route, than you're gonna have to spend some more money. $200 just won't cut it.

do yourself a favor and save a little more cash before you make a purchase. you'll be glad you did. and you don't have to have an audio card. you can get a firewire interface. Focusrite has a nice one coming out soon for $300. has got some really good features for the price.
