great portable computer speakers? or ipod dock?
great portable computer speakers? or ipod dock?
I'm looking for something just for hotel room listening. Not really for production or anything like that. Something that fits in my suitcase. I would consider a dock or regular 2.0 speakers. I like deep bass, but don't want to bring a sub with me. any suggestions? under $300 would be best...
thanks everybody!

Re: great portable computer speakers? or ipod dock?
Every iPod dock I've heard has been really, really bad sounding.
The best I've heard is the Bose. I'm not crazy about Bose in general, but theirs sounded the best. If you're looking for bass, you likely won't get it.
I imagine the one that Apple came out with might be worth a listen. I've never heard it.
As far as mobile booty bass goes, I don't know of anything that you could stick in a suitcase that won't make it a pretty miserable thing to have to lug around. Maybe a small 2.1 system built for a TV might do the trick?

seems like it would be simpler to just pack a quality boom box with an input on it.

with that budget, why not get a nice pair of headphones?mersault wrote:I'm looking for something just for hotel room listening. Not really for production or anything like that. My girl will be there too so headphones are out - though I'll bring them too for working on tracks. I was looking at the JBL that Hidden Driveways linked. I guess I would consider a smallish 2.1 - not sure which one though....
Re: great portable computer speakers? or ipod dock?
I use an FM transmitter and play through the hotel room's crappy radio from my mp3 player. very portable. you can't get proper bass without size and weight, bass is all about pushing air hard and slow.
+1 on getting a little boombox, at least with that you get more out of it, as in you can take it to the park/beach/camping.

Re: great portable computer speakers? or ipod dock?
I bought the bose companion 2 speakers for a "big" sound. surely, they sound "big" for the size, lots of bass, too, but I can't stand the totally hyped sound they have. everything is totally exaggerated: bass, stereo image etc. so, I cannot recommend a decent system, but I'd say stay away from anything bose, if you like a more or less true sound representation - working on tracks, I found impossible with these. I would try maybe one of the JBL on stage systems next time...
Re: great portable computer speakers? or ipod dock?
I guess its true - at least for now - Without size and weight, you're not getting much bass. Bass needs to physically move air to sound right. Maybe in another 50 years?
I looked at those Bose also - and the Bose ipod dock. Its always tempting. I'm not going to hate on Bose, but they have their own take on sound. ...and its not bad, but its not quite right either.
