Just got my new computer!
Just got my new computer!
Woohooo, after nearly 5 years on the same 2 GHz single-core laptop, I've finally ordered my new powerhouse machine. I am so unbelievably excited about not having to adjust latency depending on project size, freezing constantly, disk overloads, pre-rendering video projects, waiting while Live finishes it's glitch-fest from going beyond 100%. Ahh, life is about to get so much less frustrating!
So here's what's arriving in 10-14 days :
Intel i7-920 2.66G quad-core processor
Cooler Master Sileo 500 Silent tower case
ASUS P6T X58 1366 ATX Core mainboard - selected for efficiency, speed, and you can surf web/email without booting into OS
ASUS Radeon HD 3450 256MB Graphics Card 256MB - cheap and simple
4 GB 1333 MHz RAM
750 GB Seagate SATA 7200rpm drive
320 GB Seagate SATA 7200rpm drive
22x DVD burner
Flash card reader
ACER V223WBD 22" 1680x1050 Widescreen LCD monitor
All for just under $1200 at cpusolutions.com
I'll post results to the Live 8 performance test soon...

Re: Just ordered my new computer!
Haha, yea I always assume there will be problems when moving to a new computer.
So, cpusolutions just called me to say they couldn't get the 750GB seagate drive, so they're going to upgrade to 1TB for $10. Also the guy basically talked me out of upgrading the fan on the Sileo tower case...he said he was really impressed by the overall design and thought the fan would be quite sufficient. I like this company!

it still kills me that getting a terabyte of drive space isn't a stretch. technology just keeps trucking along.
you haven't gone dual+ core yet? man, welcome to flavor country.

no joke. I remember when I got a 60 gig hard drive for like 150 and thought that was cool. Good luck even finding a 60 gig now that isn't used.Tone Deft wrote:it still kills me that getting a terabyte of drive space isn't a stretch

Got the same mobo and cpu too. I had mine overclocked to 3.8G and it doesn't break a sweat. It seems like a winning combinationsigabort wrote:i bought the same mobo and cpu couple months back. you should have lots of fun i have cpu overclocked to 3.5G quite happily (i've read reports going to 4 but my system not stable with that)

i also remember how hard it was to fill 20mb hds up at that time. today it´s easier to fill a 1TB hd up ...
btw, i also remember the retail price of my 1st 30pin 4mb simm memory module /w parity. the price was similar to that what you have to pay nowadays for a very well spec'd pc.
ethios, have fun with your new makina ...
Re: Just ordered my new computer!
Got the new computer in yesterday. It is awesome!! Projects I could no longer work before are now running 20-30%. Live performance test yielded a 19%. Everything is smooth!
Setup was mostly painless. The company I ordered it from did screw up a couple of things, but no big deal. The DVD drive did not have it's power connected, and the card reader was not hooked up to the internal USB slot on the motherboard. That was pretty annoying as it took me a while to figure out why the DVD drive wasn't working, and left a nagging feeling of "what else did they screw up?" So far no other issues at all, and an easy fix.
The case is nice... much quieter than any other case I've ever had, but not silent by any means. I imagine the gigantic fan/heatsink on the processor is making the most noise. I think if I replaced the stock fans with silent fans, and maybe a water-cooling system for the processor this case would be totally silent. It's all fan noise....no vibration whatsoever.
Having a 22" monitor is awesome!! I feel like I've been living in a little tiny room forever, and just got my first taste of the outdoors...or at least a much bigger room!
So here's the case...
Opened up...notice the acoustic foam on the inside wall, top, and bottom.
A closeup of the inside...that processor fan is huge!!
I was surprised to see 8 cores in task manager, for a quad-core system, although I had read that each core can have two simultaneous threads. So, quad-core eight-thread. Nice!
Anyway, just thought I'd log the purchase on the forum in case anyone else is interested in custom building one.

^ Looks awesome, Freddy!! You'll be screamin' on that I7 for a very long time. I got my Q6600 over a year ago, and I have yet to reach over 40% on a project. And this is with 3ms latency and assloads of Guitar Rigs all over the track.
Re: Just ordered my new computer!
Wow. That computer is as tall as your guitar!
