Ableton session drums or Addictive drums..?

Post by SubLixx » Mon May 18, 2009 9:07 pm

I have 1day left until I need to Authorise Addictive drums, they sound really good particularly for the stuff I've been making lately. Should I get 'Session Drums' instead? I've watched the preview & like what I hear, but I like Addictive drums too?

Any input from anyone with any advice to swing me one way or the other?

Addictive Drums was designed to do one thing and does it great.

Session Drums is just one of many things Ableton offers.

So it depends on if you just want good enough (Session Drums) or something a little more focused and fine tuned (Addictive Drums).

Addictive Drums. Simple as that.

Way smaller size. And I mean waaayyy smaller (like 2gb). Fast load times, easy on the cpu, and most of all, sounds incredible. Great dynamics.

My personal opinon: if you need realistic sounding acoustic drums it is definitely Addictive Drums (AD). I have both AD and Session Drums, the latter is not even close to AD.

Yes, for realism, Addictive Drums.

And now the new Jazz Kit is out for Addictive Drums as well, which I'm probably going to pick up at some point. Makes it a little more versatile.

I've never tried session drums but AD are my goto for real drums. A vote for them.

+1

I would also add the advantage of a big centralized UI, rather than an endless labrynth of nested racks which must be scrolled through horizontally - big difference (to me) in workflow. The new brushes kit is excellent as well...

Totally. Drum Racks are absolutely awesome, but the cramped interface really starts to get out of control when you're dealing with nested racks and multiple layers. So I personally don't think they are great for realistic multi-sampled complex kits. They are better suited for electronic hits, operators, drag and drop single samples, that kind of thing.

What about BFD vs Addictive drums? I've heard Addictive's GUI is much straightforward? How's the sound between these two?

So did you get Addictive Drums???

It's my vote if you haven't already. I have session drums, and I just don't use it at all. I've tried but spend more time setting up than enjoying my time making music. Maybe it'll be different in an Live 10??? Yes I skipped 9. I have no faith it would be better in Live 9.

Don't know anything about BFD. I've purposely not demoed as it looks to get expensive very fast with all the add-ons and I already have an extensive wish list.

+1 for addicive. its fast and the sets sounds charming.
and the new brush-set is great, if you like jazzy sounds.
the only things i miss are drum roll samples.

i like abletons session drums too, but miss a half-open hihat in all kits. so its good for basic tracks, but not very subtile when trying variations.

bfd ist very flexible as it starts with non processed drum recordings. you can do everything... but you have to! just choose a kit and play is not enough in bfd. you should be able to mix good drums from scratch. (my expierience is based on bfd1, so maybe its different meanwhile)

Hi all,

Thanks for the responses, I bought Addictive Drums in the end. The drums sound wicked! The kik can even get quite subby, great for a variety of genres. The on board mixing and effects are excellent.

Thank you all again for the advice.
