What's funny about this video is the fact that he seems to only work in the Arrangement View. Also, when I warp tracks and take the parts I want, I usually like to use the slice function and make it a drum rack, but to each his own.

JJ is mos def the man, but you're right about the slice function. Maybe he hadn't learned about that functionality at the time he recorded the video.

Btw, did he freak that James Brown sample or what?! That was hot!

true dat, but i'm sure he was using live at around version 6 and played with sampler and used it the same way he would as if it were an ASR or MPC.

Sampler is a great way to learn sampling on the computer and also the hardware. I was able to pick up an EPS and do some damage the same way i was doing in live just in creamy lo-fi goodness.

Well, they said he was actually using version 7, but it's all good. Not everyone uses Live the same way. Like I said, I usally warp what I want and then slice to a new drum rack. I also play around in Session View forever. I don't get into Arrangement View until I am really ready to finish the song.

I do understand how sampler would be a little more user friendly to someone who comes from a hardware backround, especially something like the EPS. I was an ASR 10 user for years, but I also was a MPC 3000 user, and for me, drum racks gives me that type of workflow and then some.

Jeff is using slice too, in that case he's taking different parts out of a longer sample and assigning them to specific keys (sometimes you don't need every sample sliced out for you. Here's a nice Simple Delay preset he made for adding ambience to samples:

so i take it you like controlling your sounds via one shots with some minor tweaking of ADSR envelopes?

I prefer using both drum racks for drums and also sampler as another way of playing things with different routings.

what's the layer limitation on live 8 anyways, i haven't really pushed it yet?
