Japanese companies

Post by McQ714 » Thu Jul 23, 2009 4:20 pm

What's with these Japanese companies that have branched out into multiple industries?

Yamaha is the first that comes to mind. How do you go from making classical instruments, to electronics and electronic instruments, to motorcycles and jet skis? I understand it's different divisions, but the manufacturing of one has nothing to do with the other.

Kawasaki makes motorcycles but they also make trains, jet engines, heavy construction equipment, etc.

What are some other companies that have products across the board?

Think of it like a licensing deal. Someone else builds it made to order, then you put your name on it. Many manufacturers don't have marketing or distribution clout. They also like big orders and guarantees.

but it's not a licensing thing.. these companies actually manufacture the products. different subsidiaries or divisions but all the same company.

licensing would be the old Akai brand which is now used to "rebadge" products.

Like licensing, I under simplified. Maybe better to say, they bought the manufacturer.

It is typical to produce 'everything' witin one company banner in japan. It was always like that, mitsubishi e.g. Bank, cars, electronics, food and god knows what else... Most japanese brands are like that, nothing new.

Network - Money speech

good call! that movie is brilliant. 33 years old, it needs to be re-released to get the message out again.

Our local art movie-house, the Charles Theater, had a screening a few months ago. Still amazing.
