Les Paul (1915-2009) Besides the solid-body electric guitar which defined the sound of rock and roll, his many recording innovations include overdubbing, looping, delay effects such as "sound on sound" and tape delay, phasing effects, and multitrack recording. Here, Les Paul and Mary Ford are hosted by Alistair Cooke on a 1953 broadcast of the legendary CBS show Omnibus.

I just saw a report with both of them in a picture together. Les appreciated all the musicians who played his instruments. He felt he owed much of his success to them. They certainly owed him for theirs.

Not only did he invent the first solid body guitar (so playing at high volumes without uncontrolled feedback was much easier) but he invented multitrack recording and overdubbing.

One of the coolest memories I have is when I went with my father to see Les Paul and Chet Atkins in Harrisburg, Pa.
The entire evening was so full of great music, which I was expecting and still dumbfounded, just one of a few moments that are really epic in ones life.
Social classes were apparent and yet the range and diversity are what most suprised me.
" Obviously" I thought," True musicianship rallies those who can hear."
And it brought vinyl and album covers I had seen growing up to life, a shred feast imbued with taste, restraint, and pure realized virtousity,
tugging at intellect and heart all at one.
12 notes, 6 strings, 2 octaves.....as a young budding guitarist what more could one want,
proof of the human element, that it was possible to actually play that well....

And Chet was pretty good too...

RIP - what a life - so much to be proud of, still playing live until a few weeks ago at 94. Awesome.

Just brilliant reading his stories too, the interview he gave with Sound on Sound in 2007 on how he developed multi-track recording and the time he fooled President Eisenhower in thinking he had a magic box called a 'Les paulverizer' which was really just a multi-track tape machine controlled from a remote controller on his guitar, and stories of how he recorded how high the moon at home, in a studio with no VU meters, compressors, limiters etc. and how he had to record Mary under blankets so the neighbours didn't complain and that a firehouse across the road and a 500 lb guy in the apartment above's noise in the washroom often ruined his takes etc.

You know... its kinda fucked up that Michael Jackson got like a 1000+ posts, and Jeff Goldblum got quite a few (even though he wasn't really dead), and even Mike Tyson's kid got more than I've seen on the forum for Les Paul.

Les Paul actually influenced and touched music in a meaningful way.
Who has to die (besides the above mentioned) to touch all you electronic artists? Bill Gates, Steve Jobs, DeaddMau5, the guy who invented ecstasy, your mom?
