I'm confused about drums and creating simple beats

Post by jbauerctu » Thu Aug 27, 2009 8:09 am

Sorry guys this is the first music software I have ever used. I'm confused about creating drum beats?

There's Impulse, the Drum rack and individual wav hits. Whats the best way to create drum beats? Whats the advantage of using either way?

I used Impulse last night and the piano roll..which seemed ok but I was wondering about the other ways of doing it.

impulse is really really straight forward. drumracks are most flexible. Single wav hits - you can use follow actions to control the individual drum hits + you can use live's warping capabilites.
I use drum racks- the rack structure works for me in a way that routing sounds from impulse does not. I wouldn't use single wav hits - not enough like programming a drum machine.

+1 for drumrack
+the ability to load several [16pads like] sets within a unique drumrack,
add to this a few pitch MidiFX +16 and -16 AND you're good to go with one drumrack for a whole live session

try them all and use whatever is the best fit for you and how you prefer to work.. doesn't really matter in the end as long as you get the results you're after.

I recently got Idrum from Izotope its really cheap and has a great bouncing feature and unlimited tracks aslo and some nice features, using this as my main drumkit now :)

Get the demo from Izotope and give it a shot

i just move oneshots around in the grid on arrangement view. then colsolidate them into loops. the beauty of software is that there always more than 1 way to skin a cat.

i find it depends on what you're doing. i use drum racks or audio drum loops when producing in session view, i sometimes use wav hits for producing in arrangement view, and i only use drum racks for performing (for drums that is). i find impulse often attenuates the audio of each hit in a negative way when multiple hits go on at once, so i stay away from it. but i have used it.

If your used to using physical instruments then maybe you should try getting a trigger finger. I bought one a while back and has definitley improved my percussion sections 10x
