I think it means "I'm hereby paying respect to the dearly departed."

Maybe that the perception of the world is often distorted and confusing and that the only time the confusion goes away is when death occurs. Peace = Death? That's one way to make the chaos go away. It's a person's way of saying- the troubles of the world, for her, are no more.

R.I.P. is an old saying, originating from the Latin "requiescat in pace."

I know what you're getting at. How can anyone that's dead be at "peace" or feel any other thing for that matter? Well, that's a big philosophical question and can be debated ad nauseum because, so far, no one has been able to tell us what death is really like.

Many cultures have an historic fear of the dead, either of the dead influencing their lives or literally returning. Hence, "rest in peace" may be akin to a spell to keep them down...

It's even worse out here in neckville. When somebody dies out here, people get custom vinyl lettering for the back of their pickup truck as a permanent reminder of the dead. I guess it goes hand in hand with the country music, where people just seem to want to be bummed out.
Hmmm.....I'm not sad right now, but I kinda wish I was.......here, let me put in this country track about the death of someone's dad, then go look at the obnoxious billboard on the back of my inevitable pickup truck........there! NOW I'm unhappy!!! YAY!
