Anyone into Wonky, New School Beatscience?

Post by m:o » Sun Aug 30, 2009 12:03 pm

I recently really dig the sounds of artists like Dorian Concept ,Nosaj Thing
the whole Brainfeeder universe (FlyLo, Gaslamp Killer...)Lukid, Cupp Cave
Hudson Mohawke and such.

For me it was an eyeopener to hear those music
on Mary Ann Hobbs BBC1 Experimental show. Never could dive deep into HipHop
for beeing a Person who cares much of Sounddesign, experimental textures
and diverse soundarrangements - less the lyrics (which often irritate me
listening to the sound). Thus i found my passion in electronic music which
is also after many years nothing than amazing to explore.

I wonder if some of you guys out there share the excitement of exploring a "new"
genre and dig deeper into your own soundcosmos while doing such music on your own.

If a friend said to me a few years ago i will be doing the wonky hiphop beats,
i had laughed at him. But now it feels so good to expand my musical expression.
No dogmas, no fixed ideas of "no-goes" and such. In those days when i open up Live
it feels more like wildlife which wasn't so for me before.
Hell, Yeah!

Yeah all those artists are great... and their output at the moment is the best stuff i'm hearing right now.

I know Dorian Concept uses Live - lots of improv to create his tracks I believe. And there's a picture somewhere of Flying Lotus with an APC40 I think.

Absolutely. Open-minded experimentation and boundary breaking is where it's at for me.

Some nice choices you've given there.

Absolutely! For decades now I've been of the opinion that lyrics in a song are like a cyst on the eyeball. There has been, in the past, nowhere near enough experimental, instrumental hip hop. When you eliminate lyrics, all attention is turned to your arrangement, sound design, etc. It's very nice to see and hear things moving forward.
Something that seems to be resurfacing that I've been sorely missing is "transitional" arrangements, where a song changes the way it sounds and the art and interest lies in the creativity of those transitions. It's like when you listen to a new dubstep track, you really only need to hear the 1st 30 seconds, because thats the way its going to continue to sound until the track runs out. I don't really understand why this has become so acceptable. Here's an example of an ancient track that continues changing throughout its duration. In terms of arrangement, it still seems to be ahead of its time, and that kinda sucks.

totally agree. the non-linearity of arrangements is what keeps me thrilled to the end of song. where usually a dj has to blend music to avoid that it's getting boring
(i also know of the enormous energy of repetion in music) a good arrangement can send you far out. best example itm for me is

Dr. Strangeloop - Are We Lost Mammals Of An Approaching Transcendental Epoch out on Brainfeeder (-->http://www.strangelooptv.com/)
a track 17 min. long which turns out to be an ode to diversity in music. a beautiful motherfucker of a track. a pure pool of inspiration.
recommended!

compared to this kind of music, 80% of the recently output in electronic music is uncreative and boring just to turn itself in circles.

i really like dorian concept.. hell of a player.
i like flylo too and he is shit hot live... but sometimes the vinyl crackle he adds to his tracks kind of annoys me.. many others do it too... and also it has no dynamic range at all. I know its part of the sound and all that, just my opinion.

I am more into the uptempo intersection of wonk/dubstep and funky: Joker, Gemmy, Emvee, Brackles, Ramadanman, etc

I grew up on hip-hop, for some reason MOST of the downtempo stuff doesn't move me.

PS: That new Dorian Concept record is incredible.

found it on boomkat. thanks for that. many producers would have taken the material in that song and isolated the segments into maybe as much as 6 different tracks. i sure hope the reason is not an economic one. that many tracks could be a big release as opposed to 1 long track, i get it, i just have an opinion that the long tracks with transitions have more opportunity to create.

Yeah I'm feelin' all this shit at the moment, and like the OP, it has sort of revitalised my love of electronic music.

Noasj Thing remix of Camel by Flying Lotus is sublime

all of their sounds are more rooted in the past than the experimental, all of their foundations consist of the boombap, flylo sprinkles distractive percussion over the boombap, GLK does the classic rock over the boombap, and dorian utilizes classical training and chops over the boombaps, in addition to that all of them mess with the time signatures a bit. they all sound great though.
