Post by roembach » Wed Sep 09, 2009 9:25 pm

im making some dubstep and house, techno, etc, and cant really figure out how to set up one of those super dirty, gritty bass sounds, redux doesnt seem to keep the notes and dynamics the same, and overdrive doenst have enough, any ideas?

It's in the synthesis of the bass - not in the effects and processors (albeit they are helpful after you lay down the foundation). I like using operator and I can get some nastyyyyyyy bass sounds from that synth - it's so easy to use.

I suggest you create a patch that includes a saw and maybe a square wave, make another one or two instances of it, with each instance being slightly detuned (maybe three cents) ... Sculpt the sound to your liking with a saturator (don't go overboard) and EQ (it's a good idea to EQ out some of the the mid-range frequencies in the 200-600 range, as these muddy the sound).

Check out some of my latest tunes here and you can see the bass sounds I've achieved with operator: http://www.soundcloud.com/ntny

good luck!

I like two square waves an octave apart, with one detuned +-3 cents or so.

And NI's Massive...

layers... try splitting your 'bass' sound into different frequency ranges on differnt tracks and distorying the mid-range, redux on the highend. etc
or layer a distorted bass sound on top of a detuned saw wave
etc
chorus
saturation
