L.A. awaits...

of course they'll take all your "quality" and when you don't have any left the girls in shorts won't be interested either, but that's a lesson people like to learn on their own...

basically you have to make it shiter, slower, add some grime, put less work into it and nick some hook line from a funk song, then he'll like it.

also, if you know what constitutes a hip hop beat, please enlighten me..

your second track needs to be slowed down and EQs little more on the mids and the lows and you got a good beat.

but yea. I'm from the bay too and when you try to teach these youngins about breaks and chopping up samples all they care about is reason refills. Just keep it moving and sooner or later you will find the right audience who likes your sound.

Buy a copy of Hip Hop Ejay for about 20 bucks from the bargain bucket of Staples or PC World or somewhere, you get all the full range of different crunk beats (5 samples) you need at 93 bpm and some sampled orchestral stabs and gritty power chords sampled on a Casio SK1 a la TOne Loc 'Wild Thing' etc.

Then charge 200 bucks for your 'sick dope beatz'. This is how most of the young 'hoodz' do it, spamming on soundclick or whatever. This or presets from Fruity Loops ripped off a torrent.

Interesting.
I'm working with a rapper on an album. I'm making the music. It's been an interesting process. He has been very pleased with the results, and we have a good collaboration going. I have more of a Roots, Mos Def interest, and he is more interested in the southern (Lil Wayne) sound. He wants some of the songs to be a hit, even though I'm grounded enough to know that it takes more than just good music to make it.

I'd say--keep this song as it is and make a new song. I've immersed myself in rap and hip hop, and I now have a better sense of what makes a good hip hop beat. Ask him to give you a list of 5 songs that are styles he wants, and style the beat after that. I'm sure you'll have the melody and hooks covered.

Or, just replicate Boom Boom Pow by the Black Eyed Peas and be done with it. :D
