thats not necessarily a no, it just means you'll have to tweak it considering the fact that any audio/midi i/o objects in a standalone patch will have to be discarded since m4l handles that stuff through Live

Here's the same answer I gave you on the C74 forum:

M4L IS Max 5 with the ability to pair with Live 8. You can use pre-existing Max patches but in order to do so you must first create a M4L device in Live, copy the code from the pre-existing Max patch and paste it into the window of the new M4L device, and then save the device into Live's library.

Edit: And yes, things will have to be tweaked once they are running in the device. It's not going to be a situation where you just "plug and play." You'll need to know what's what in the patch you're trying to port.

heh, didn't think about copying and pasting in the patch. would you need both max and m4l to do so though?

me and stax are a bout to be proud owner of a monome each and we'd probbaly like to avoid buying max unless we really have to.

Max for Live IS Max 5, with the added functionality of being able to bridge between Max and Live. When you create a Max Device in Live as soon as you hit that Edit button it launches Max 5. Do your patching in Max and then when you save that particular patch it will know to save it as a Max Device file instead of a Max Patcher.

exactly... this is why I am hoping, for us users for own licenses to both programs that M4L is either free or a VERY nominal fee (no more than $50)... I can't really see paying more than that for something I basically already own. Otherwise, I hope the release does come soon as I am very excited about this relationship...
