This is a old thread but I think I still feel it's weight. Like for instance when I "DJ" for my friends -they usually get some bands too- there's always some dick there talking about how he could pick songs on his ipod or whatever and It's lame and I'll try to explain why,

I think possibly (I'm no exception especially when I was a bit younger) people who like to be recognized for being "creative" cant stand it when anyone else is getting attention at shows and what not. That's why all this hatred for the dj's possibly... like they have done anything to stop you from being creative... Like all those people who are trying to have a good time want to hear YOUR SPECIAL MUSIC. HA!

It was just so eye opening one night because I'm usually performing with jazz, improvised groove, and all types of instrument based music -and that shits hard- and no one shows up to gigs and no one gives a fuck. But when you dj you are performing a service almost, and it's strange how even though it's been done "right" apparently (people dancing and singing and jumping and sweating) there's somehow room for these dicks to hate and hate and hate. I guess after being scrutinized for simply having a good time I just cant understand any legitimate reason to hate DJ's really. I can see tons of reasons not to make it your only outlet of music expression because it barely qualifies as that... but it's nice to be able to give your friends a good time without having to rehearse a band and load a ton of gear. It's something you can do as a gift. It's fun. It's not artistically satisfying. (bold statement I know) But who fucking cares. If you can respect dancing you should respect a good dj.

im not a dj :D

i use live for EVERYTHING, in my home studio, live, for fun..

and im into tons of differnt types of music..

my band uses live: www.youtube.com/hfts1
www.myspace.com/herofromthestart

and they play hardcore/screamo stuff..

im working with an electronica duo..
iv produced music for a singer/songwriter who does mostly acoustic acts but wanted to do something trancy...

i LOVE using it to dj (errrrmmm screw around... although i have used it in a dj manner but i dont consider myself a dj)

i LOVE making house/trance electronica, music
and its amazing for making pre-production demos... i gues because my musical experiences/influences clash soo it allows me to incorporate a ton of stuf i never expected into one thing. :D enjoy!

Retired DJ.

Excuse this rant BUT - these days everybody is a DJ, or at least they call themselves a DJ. Sometimes they just use a laptop and play one song after the other without mixing and cop a huge amount of attitude claiming to be a "DJ." From what I see from looking at online pics etc., the new crop of DJs has a large amount of douchebags and posers in it. I am sorry but that is how I see it, and I'm glad I quit- cause the new environment is so annoying to me.

Well anyway. I've used Live for mashups, but mainly use it to build songs and sounds from the bottom up.

This program reminds me of Photoshop- always something new to learn, huge online community replete with tons of tuts. On a rainy day I can just look at a video and get a fun new idea to try. For example, the most recent Ableton YouTube post about how to use the vocoder. What a blast! This program is very deep and keeps me engaged. Because there are so many users, there's so many tips and tricks out there.

I did consider Live for DJing but the deal breaker for me was the difficulty browsing/selecting/loading tracks, using tag info, when dealing with a library of several thousand songs.

You can always spot the DJ in the crowd.

I'm not a DJ, I'm a musician/mixer/producer. I use Live to make music.

Depends on the venue
At some places an iPod is, and should be, the DJ.
Just imagine spinning country music on a set of CDJs (with Deadmau5's autograph on the side of them  )

I'm not a DJ
I make drumbeats and record guitar, bass and vocals over the top of them. never finish though because the seemingly infinite potential of the parameters peels my dome back and another idea or opportunity eventually arises.
The time is hardly ever wasted because practice, fresh material, and understanding come from the sketch pad that is Live.

During the last years, I started with DJing. Quickly after Vinyl only, I experienced Traktor, then Keylocked mixing, then Harmonic mixing, then Midi control, and now I'm on the edge of using Ableton for mixing.

But that's just one part.

I played the Guitar for 12 years, partially in a band, too.

Now with ableton, I'm happy to be able to mix-match-n-fit all of my music knowledge plus adding tons of new knowledge about electronic music, music theory, and (soon with m4l) programming together.

sort of combining all i've ever done with music, and logic.

it's awesome :)

so i don't call myself a dj only, but a dj as well.
