i genraly hate laptops but am very happy with my new acer.

though my desktop is kind of old now so the fact the lappy runns better than it adds to the appeal.

no FW slots (not even ricoh or 2nd class integrated chipset). Crummy sound card. For DAW work = FAIL.

these are the guys you want for PC laptops.

Hey Slightlydelic, did you change anything in Vista for boost your performance? I've deleted all the Acer crap softwares and games except the ones I need. Audio is really fine but I can see some occasional red peaks in DPC latency checker.

There was a vista guide somewhere for Serato but I cant find it last time I googled for it.

I've tested this one out with 8.0.4 running. So sweet...buy now and you'll get a free upgrade to Windows 7. It's a true desktop replacement.

except for having an unknown generic (probably o2) firewire chipset, which has been documented as not working with M-Audios's Profire 610 or 2626 (for starters) :( - otherwise, these are good specs.

With these and the new iMacs dropping I can't wait to start spending again on new toys.

Do you get a discount because you work at HP?

I put together a config for fun's sake with the ADK-8500 MV with a QUAD core processor T9550 2.66 Ghz, 17" screen, which has VIA firewire (a decent choice, actually preferred by Presonus over TI firewire), 4GB 1066 DDR3 for $2200 with Vista 64 and free upgrade to W7. This is comparable to a DUAL core Macbook Pro. ADK have a very good reputation as DAW laptop and desktop builders and people at Gearslutz loves Scott (one of the bosses at ADK) who regularly posts there.

The consumer level 1300-1500 dollar HP, Sony, Dell, etc are fine for most tasks but they don't always make for a good laptop choice for pro audio.

That 3k laptop is probably a BEAST. I mean, I paid that several years ago for a top of the line Dell Inspiron which is being used as a door wedge now ;)

I have a laptop with a quad-core desktop processor, 3x 320GB HDs, and 4GB ram, with a 17" display. It's pretty KILLER. Seriously.

But like kb420 said, though, it cost a pretty penny.
