The VIRUS and Live 4

Post by e-rase » Mon Feb 21, 2005 4:49 pm

:D When I'm recording MIDI do I have to keep changing Banks and Programs in Live to match up with the Patch I've selected in my Virus KC. Is'nt it possible to just change the Patch and Banks on my Virus and Ableton Live will automaticly change its Banks and Programs to what I have selected on my keyboard. If this is possible could someone please explain.

Thanks

i only have a virus B since monday, but it seems to me that if you want to change a MULTI or a SINGLE, it's via sysex.
and live doesn't accept sysex...

in the future i think i'll look how to change the SINGLES of a MULTI, but that's not for now...

EDIT : apprently, i've not understood the question... again... i think i should take some english lessons

No mexique I don't think it's your fault. The question is a little confusing. I don't think there is a program change in Live. I may be wrong.

IMO using the virus in multi mode is best. I know I wouldn't need more than 16 parts on any song.

If you wanted to change parts in Live you would map keys to play different tracks. You could also use controlAid to help you do this. In this case I would use a certain Midi channel on the Virus just for controlling Live. You can set a part of a multi in the Virus to not send a sound and use that for your controller.

If this does not answer your question, please rephrase it.

yes there is : you can define a MSB, LSB and PC value for each midi clip :)
it works fine

i only have an english pdf version of the manual, so i can't read it when i go to the WC  i quickly took a look at the section where it's explained how to change the multis and parts, and all i saw was sysex, sysex...

and of course, the virus in MULTI MODE is the best... i also discovered how to use it as an effect device : wonderful :)

Effect device?

I also have a Virus KC as a couple of months ago & I'm finding cool stuff on it all the time, but since it's my 1st hardware synth, its probably nothing new to yall... Anywho, have yall figured out a way to select more than one bank in Live & play them at the same time?

Also, I'm probably pretty late figuring this out, but downloaded SoundDriver the other day & set it up with my KC & it's unreal how easy it is to assign parameters to the mod wheel & other knobs with it. I still like tweeking the knobs on the unit, but for setting everything else, SoundDriver rocks...

If yall come up with anything else cool having to do with the Virus, shoot me an email cuz I'd love to hear more about it.

I've had a Virus since version B came out and i'm still discovering new tricks. Howards Scar's book on programming the beast is excellent.

However live can't yet take full advantage of it as it doesn't do System Exclusive Messages needed to automate every parameter. A way around this is to use a Contoller number in the MOD assign section to automate what you want in various different ways. This Controller can be contrlled from Live Automation a la clip envelopes.

As regards changing Multis..

Set Global Channel to one
Set MultiPrgChg to Ena
Set Device ID to 1
All in System/Multi edit Menu

Midi channel one's program changes now select multis :D

Holy crap, now I'm really lost... I wish that darn German manual explained how to do something other than telling you that it can be done... It's like they're still trying to keep secrets from us...

thanx, this will be useful in the future

maybe you could help me (for the future too) : i suppose you can change a part of a multi (without changing the whole multi), but it is via PC or Sysex ?

regards :D

That multi program change is only available in Multi mode btw, not multi single mode (both lights on). Program change can be made to individual parts in Multi Single mode but not in Multi mode.........i think. cant check it out now unfortunatly
