i compose, mix and rough master in live...normally the label will handle the mastering.
i'd typically average 35 tracks (not including the chains within my drumracks).
if i'm doing studio based multi-track recording for bands (typically 3-5 piece bands) then it's pro tools hd. the advantages of hd in this situation are: no latency issues, guaranteed track count but most importantly the playlist and drop-in features that make doing multiple takes a breeze

To add another artist to the list, Scorb (Trick Music) does.
I agree though, for me, Live starts to fall over with more than about 40 tracks. But if you can live with that it's possible to produce a good mix, especially if using a better EQ plugin.

the so called serious DAWs have very limited wiring/parameter modulation (macro controls, LFOs, envelope control/followers) capabilities, let's check the "toy" ones: Reason has cables, FL Studio has Patcher, Ableton L has Track View to able to build device and fx chains easily, adding automation to them also very handy and straightforward, so this toy thing is bullshit try to create an EDM track from scratch with Cubase ...
there is nice how to make trance in Cubase tutorial here
http://producerbox.com/items/291/Cubase ... Step).html it was pitiful to see the workflow in it

I mix in Live all the time unless someone specifically requests Pro Tools.

you dug up a two and half year old thread to say that?
did Santa not give you anything for Christmas?
it's interesting to me that people knock something that is used in a musical context like a DAW by calling it a toy... not Pro enough for them... but if they were Pros... they would play a live show...
play a guitar
play the bass
play the drums
play Candlestick Park
play Madison Square Garden

.....plus that's his first comment since 2008, when his opinion was "Live itself is a great audio editor".

I always mix down in Logic.
Just a much more satisfying environment for me.
Also gives more overall control in the arrangement.
