Hehe, I knew it would be a let down. There are so many synths around its not funny and FM7 (altho from a rival company) is already a great fm synth.
What made Live itself so great is that it filled a void that nobody else had attempted to fill properly. Pattern based audio and then midi sequencing with full control implementation for live use and a great and simple workflow.
But what does Operator do thats so new? I like that "boring" picture that somone posted
It's a very good idea that its an option to purchase and you don't have to buy it.

That shows a massive lack of awareness of what the users want and will pay for.
Every update since i've been using Live has had features that solved problems i've had since day one making music, in novels ways i had never thought of.....follow clips is the latest thing they added with little to no fanfare that has taken my music another level into the stratosphere, THIS is why i am so loyal to Ableton...its the little things only heads would think of to implement.
Yes, exactly! The little things are what make Live so great.
I've played with Operator and had a tinkle with the lessons, and it's all OK. But OK doesn't warrant $100+
Perhaps my opinion will change over more time using it. But it sure does use a heck of a lot of CPU, on both my machines (easily crashed my low-end PC, and hogged a bit on my high-end - won't be very good in a full track i imagine).
I also find it strange how they've included it with the latest update, and so prominantly - how can I remove it?

Nice little synth.
It does have some great sounds and sounds just like my Dx7 but at that price and with that much cpu usage , I'm afraid I cant justify the cost.

yeah, I was very disappointed at first. I could buy a s/h dx7 and a guitar pedal for that kind of money. BUT
IT's awesome. IMHO, of course, but still. The integration with live is just stunning, and the amount of fun tweaks is staggering - ever tried getting fm7 to retrigger the amp envelope for osc 4 at 1/4, and automating it to move up to 1/12, and then doing the opposite for the pitch envelope? That took 30 seconds with operator. AND I can assign the knobs for that operation in like 10 seconds.
If this thing ever gets down to 50ish$, i'm buying it. Awesome.

Other than not being able to save patches. What are the limitations of the demo? Demo will only work for so long?

Pffff... to much cash... I think 75 euro would be nicer to registed users.
Ableton starts to become a expensive program!

Things in live for which I would pay $150:
1. freeze function
2. ghost/linked clips
3. markers with keyboard shortcuts in arrange view
4. option of viewing more than one envelope at a time in session/arrange view
5. recording of automation in clips in session view
Things in live for which I will not pay $150:
1. operator

You owe me some 149/5 bucks.
Midi clip in armed track in session will record automation. Set Midi overdub on in options.
If you have one clip with automation in the same scene and records into another empty or not clip with overdub, the automation will be recorded but the notes untouched (if there were no notes in the "sending" clip)

It doesn't interpolate the values converted from MIDI input.
Translation:
Filter sounds "choppy" when sweeping via MIDI controller. Not very useful in a live situation. Those are the sort of details I would have expected Ableton to notice. I'm a little dissapointed with that, but I do like the sound of it. I don't think the patches show its true potential.
I'm having fun with it... but that new version of Kontakt will probably get my money before Operator does.

are you using 14 bit controllers?
When in live with my BCR2000 I can set anything up to recieve 14 bit values and that makes everything smooth like cream
