.
I either record to the drum rack track with extracted drum chains set to "in" and/or work on individual patterns within the chain. If the latter I treat the extracted chain as any other track. I send my all drum rack chains to a separate drum buss as the drum rack track stops being a buss for extracted chains.
If you extract chains with existing patterns the clip will be split up per chain. If you have existing extracted chains, like I have in my default template, you can uncheck "Exclusive [Arm]" in the preferences and record patterns to new chain split ones multiple at a time. Or record directly on the chain from Push while on the chain/track, the only difference being moving between tracks with the arrows, instead of just switching the pad.
Upsides
The big upsides to me with separate patterns per voice are different grooves and swing can be applied per voice and each voice can be frozen separately. As I use a softsynth as the major drum sound source on a slower machine that's big. Especially as I typically process each drum voice to get the sound I want.
Most importantly I can send drum voices to the same returns as other tracks and vice versa. I can also leave some drums in the drum rack if I want to treat them as before and just keep some extracted chains if I prefer that.
