New Apple MacBook out
too bad u can't get it with a 7200 rpm drive... That's the only reason im still leaning towards an imac for my next purchase. I have 1.25 15" G4 right now that still perform s with Live well enough to do the weekly gigs, i just don't really use any sick fx i like to use in my demos. However, at a price liek that, I'll just save a few more weeks and maybe get the black one and a 17 inch imac...

Put it in yourself. Easy as apple pie (sorry)
15" PB 2.5 Ghz, 4 Gig RAM, 750 GB HD, Live 9 still no cue points or program change messages?!?. Doesn't do shit.
I see two questions Live users will want answered...
1. Will the shared graphics memory = unimpressive performance? We need to see test results. Ideally with 2GB RAM installed.
2. Would replacing the 5400RPM drive with a 7200RPM drive melt this thing? Any technical limitations on this? What is the largest/fastest internal 7200RPM drive people think would work in this?

A 3.5" drive isn't going to fit!
thanks for the info, but now I'm asking myself too many questions to be confident enough to buy anything. I've got a bunch saved, but I feel like I'm waiting for Live six and next quarter and my birthday which are all around the same time to see the new intel powermac, it would be stupid to buy two new computers, unless i could sell this powerbook, which i don't think I can unless i get the minor cosmetic damage fixed...
money better spent on controllers, I need to eliminate the mouse!!!!!!!
also, does a 7200 rpm drive put more strain on cpu, or only on power consumption, not that I would really go and void my warranty by doing this...

AGREED! Also, sounds like you'd void the warranty by switching to the 7200.
Be affraid music people, I have a sony vio with the equivlent chipset, using this system is NOT mac spec!!!!!!! Yes, having a chipset suck on cpu and ram will kill certain performance aspects for musiciansTarekith wrote:Yeah, the Intel 950 Chipset worries me a bit too.
BTW, the top end Macbooks (not the pros) are the only ones that come in black, and it's more than just the 20 extra GB HD. It also has the faster processor.

For the purposes of using the machine with Live I suspect the disadvantage of the 950 would be minimal. I guess we'll see when someone buys one and tests it.Danny Futuro wrote:well for what its worth, wouldnt the macbook with the 950 graphics perform as well or better than the powerbook and ibook it replaces?

I wrote earlier in the thread that Live runs EXTREMELY WELL on my Core Duo Mac Mini with shared graphics. (better than my G5) I don't see any audio performance loss due to graphic overhead. I haven't even optimized my RAM config - I have one 256 chip and a 1GB chip... (you're supposed to have matching RAM pairs when using shared graphics memory)
I think my Mini is listed in the Performance Test thread as well. It runs audio in OSX perfectly as well as in Windows XP.
Shared graphics on the Macbook is not a problem for audio apps.
