as a foreigner I'm really amazed with the communist paranoia I see on most people here. I'm sure it made sense after the post WWII clash and with the peak of the cold war, but continuing it now it's simply absurd. This was all due to propaganda because you were at war with another country...that happened to be communist.
But from there to consider any social measure as communist/evil-minded is just ignorance imo. At least consider it and try to see the other side of the coin.
the way you generalize that social measures are for low lives and crack heads only...it's just sad and show how distorted your view of reality really is. Most people I know make under 100k a year. Not that many make more than 50k to be honest. I can tell you that most of them are highly dedicated individuals that are trying to make the best for their education and their future. Now minimizing all this because a small proportion of ppl that don't give a shit about their lives...it's narrow minded and simply selfish. it's basing your life on the negative instead of the positive. Why don't you think on the amount of good ppl that these measures are going to help?
And companies won't lose much with this. If this was a small country companies could just move to another country with cheaper labor to do business in, but this is the place. They have no choice but adapt. Less profits for big shots and stock market transactions, but a bit more for the ones depending on pay checks at the end of the month.
I understand where the individualist, DIY, sink or swim mentality comes from. You guys were pioneers exploring and conquering a vast land land and you had to rebel from the British aristocracy so it's clear where this is coming from. And I'm sure it made sense and it was a great part of the US success in post WWII. But what you guys have to realize is that from a social point of view the US are reaching a critical point. The social problems are accumulating and if you don't do anything to stop certain problems you guys may face rupture pretty quickly.
You guys may think that the Iraq situation atm is due to their inferiority as a society...but could you imagine what would be of places like LA, Philadelphia, or DC if suddenly you removed all police and army from the streets?
this is how you measure the health of a society. Your individualism is turning into a merciless lack of solidarity that if not check in time may grow into some weird shit in the future.
What's the point of having a nice income when crime is stopping you from walking safely on the streets and your youth is so uninformed and uneducated?
Another point I don't understand is this fixation with taxes. You guys are already paying a LOT of taxes. You guys pay as much taxes as europeans and you get zero in return.
And health care is a joke in here. you guys are being robbed from every possible angle. You have bad service, totally non humane treatment, and you pay like anywhere else on the planet.
I just think that with the fear of being controlled by the government, you guys gave everything away and are now controlled by a much worse scum. You think Bill Gates will stop importing cheap labor from India because of nationalistic ideals? Or banks are going to help ppl out paying their (predatory) loans. Or insurance companies will pay your medical bills if you have a pre condition. no way. It's like capitalistic is turning around and it's biting the same people that defended it in the first place.
With the money you guys pay for health you should have VIP treatment in every hospital emergency room. Same for college. Just look around in grad schools. They're full of foreign students that can perform similarly or better than American students. Are your $40000 tuitions really providing you guys with a $40000 education?
what you guys should have in mind is that there's shit that needs to be done and it's simply non profitable. And that shit needs to be done fast.
I think government control just allows for a better organization when it comes to solve problems. Expecting companies to solve problems based on profit is taking your capitalistic dream too far.
even if just for the sake of democracy, it's simply better to keep swinging between parties to avoid abuses of power...what's teh difference between having the same party in power for 16 years under a democracy, or having a totalitarian state?
and the fears about Obama are so low and without class. When you start discussing personalities it just means that you're out of arguments. you really think that a man alone could turn this into a communist state? with the amount of lobbies in DC, and all teh control and influence he'll have from the party?
c'mon..be realistic. He's lucky if he's able to implement half of what he says he will.
and the final claim is really just by looking at the candidates. It's clear to me that McCain is just a puppet in there. He doen't sound convincing. His body language. He has a memorized speech. he doesn't come out naturally.
OTOH Obama has an attitude, has good ideas, there's confidence and personality in his speech.
in the last debate, the way McCain returned to the personal attacks after discussing how the negative politics were distracting the discussion about the serious problems and solutions...it just showed is lack of class...and if you ask me...a bit of his lack of intelligence.
And when it comes to Palin...if you think that this is a person you want representing your country and deciding the future of your kids...then I rest my case right here
