i used to use Live to play drums (MIDI)... rewire to Cubase... record vox and guitar/bass there... export from the master track in Cubase. done.

What do you mean you dont? Last I checked (in the last couple of months) ableton was audio only rewire. This is something Id be thrilled to be wrong about.

jebus chris 3dot!!.. how much crashing can one man take? this was Cubase SX3, Live 7 and early Live 8. need i say more? ok, on XP.

besides it just became easier to roll with one DAW and the GUI in Live had me at zoom.


@ donmich - i'm sure i used it for drums... it really wasn't up to Live i don't think... Cubase was the master. it's been a couple of years. tell ya what, i am going to be rescuing more tracks tonight. i will try and find/remember one that is setup that way and get the answer. i will be doing this for days... i've got at least 60 or 70 songs that i have to go through and there has to be at least 4 or 5 of them setup that way... i plan on moving/copying them all to a brand new drive that can be moved from PC to PC from here to Timbuktu without ever having to see that damn "media files missing" red eye sore on the bottom of Live again. i'll post back here.


back @ 3dot... now that i look back... i remember thinking at the time how amazing it was to re-wire. i thought that over complicated piece of shit was so

at first, i was using Live strictly as a MIDI-mobile while routing the live audio signals through Cubase.

Rewire WAS cool.. well at least it was a good premise/idea
(don't really know about anything "better" to come along..)
but it didn't really work as planned.. and the timing was horrible..
plus all the other junk that comes with working 2 DAWS at 1 time..
and the whole slave/master where you'd have to open the apps in a certain order and close them in the reverse order.. that was f'd up..

Hmm. Never tried to actually route the midi. Didnt even think you could do that. Especially on a Mac. When you launch it, the browser is empty with a msg that says "unfortunately you cant use plugins in rewire".
Maybe you can use the stock instruments but I dont own any.
Routing the midi would be pretty dope. But sounds complicated. And I only like a couple of stock instruments in Logic.

^ i don't know about Logic. i am strictly speaking Live and Cubase. i have rewired FL Studio to both of those... that works really well. i have to agree with 3dot though... the whole open them up in a certain order thing is a pain in the A$$, especially if one of them crashes... like the main host


while we've derailed this thread about a rumored DAW to talk about actual DAWs, does anyone know what to do, or can be done, about a corrupt Cubase file?
i have a track that won't open. it crashes the program every time while trying to load VSTs and/or effects. if there is a "safe mode" or a way to open Cubase tracks with only the audio/midi (no effects etc) it would be most helpful. of all the tracks that i could finish the one that amps me up the most, is practically done except for slight level adjustments, has a hook, and the lyrics are still burned into my mind... it's this one and it won't open!

The only thing I can really think of is importing each midi and audio track separately in a fresh project. Will suck if there are a ton of disorganized unlabeled midi tracks though...
And I dont even know if thats possible. Can you brows inside a song file from the import dialogin Cubase?

if Ableton allowed 3rd party plugs to run in Rewire mode, it could be *very* useful as a slave to Cubase, Logic or StudioOne, etc.

But it doesn't. Which effing blows and I've ranted about it 'round these parts oh so many times.

3dots arguments are silly because 1. people do rewire Live into other hosts (threads on gearslutz, kvr, etc about this) and 2. even more people would be likely to do it if Live wasn't so horribly crippled while running in slave mode.

oh but if 3dot doesn't know anybody who does it, then nobody does it.

i know a guy who rewires ableton and logic to pro tools. i'm not kidding.

the beta videos of bitwig look fine enough, nothing i'm super jazzed about though. I just like buying new things.

now to counter your arguments :
1. sure one can use a badly implemented solution to some extent..
I'm sure some people use it..(I have at a certain point) the "nobody uses it" statement was a joke.. har har..
moreover .. if it's out there.. people are bound to use it..
then make their own decisions..

2. a thought.. maybe live is crippled as slave because of potential problems with following the rewire protocol and hosting vsts at the same time ?
maybe that's the "reason" propellerheads don't host vst to this day.. ?

I rewire Live into Digital Performer.
ReWire does suck though, simply because it's possible to do better, but Propellerheads have no Reason to.
With OSX anyway, Jack, a MIDI Clock and the IAC MIDI driver will give you full "rewire", all free software, so it's possible for Rewire to be fully functional.
The person or company that solve this has my money.
