1210's are pretty
yes they are, i only wanted to point out, that in a club situation they are bloody space wasters for a performance setup that does not require 1210s
and you can't even move 'em quickly away in 95% of cases. and companies can't design modern stuff with experienced users our days... arrghhh!!!!

end of rant.

I have to say it looks underwhelming. I can press buttons on my laptop keyboard (I'm doing it right now in fact), OK they don't light up but maybe I'm not that keen on science fiction.

But lots of you seem happy about this new device, good stuff, I hope you enjoy using it and more importantly, use it well.

But I'm sorry... to all you people who complain of devices not having a hole in the bottom so you can sit it on a turntable... put a roll of sellotape underneath, FFS.

i am talking about the unbelievable situation that a company can't engineer / design properly anymore.
workarounds of that kind in 2009 should be not necessary anymore.

One of the many reasons I have , for the most part, abandoned my Pro Tools HD rig and now do about 80% of my production in Live is for the very reason you describe. I can walk around my house with my laptop and create stuff on the fly - no dongles or expensive hardware required. I can even key in parts with the qwerty keyboard whilst riding on the train!

But I think you're missing the point of the launch pad and the apc40 (and other controllers as well). It's not just about launching clips or tapping in a simple beat using a qwerty keyboard. Using a HW controller I can easily adjust sends, pans, volume - grab a filter and sweep, mute a kick, tweak a sw synth plug etc... It makes it much easier to actually perform during my sets vs just launching some loops. Or be productive on a train, plane or in my hotel without carrying around a bunch of gear and heavy power supplies.

As far as the lights, I've been triggering loops in Live since 2000. I've used everything from M-Audio ozones to hand made bobble head triggers to my current set up of Xone 4D / X-Station / Remote Zero MKII. It's not about science fiction, but visual feedback. Thats why I'm so stoked about the new generation of HW for Live. It gives me a better "at a glance" overview of whats going on and it gets me away from my laptop so I'm not "mousing around" which generally detracts from the energy of my shows.

I'm all for people performing with the tools that they find best for their circumstances....

A big thank you to Akai!

For not having any in the shops in Holland.
For the ridiculous price difference with the USA
Totally turning me off the APC40

I have my BCF2000 with motorfaders which I prefer.
Nocturn that can control as many sends as you like with MIDI clients
All I wanted was the grid.... LAUNCHPAD!!!!

Quite impressed with all the mixer/pan/send stuff they thought of. :!: :!: :!: :!:

This is an industry like any other that likes to make you think that you need this shit to put on a more entertaining show. The truth is at most shows people don't care if you are triggering clips with assigned keys on your laptop or a plastic light array in the form of this or the APC. Sorry to be harsh but I just think these controllers are beginning to become nauseating. In reality there is so much you can do without a midi controller just using key assignments. Once you add modifiers like shift and alt the sky is the limit! Just as responsive and all the feedback you need is right in front of the screen. If you're playing in a DJ booth nobody can see what you are doing anyway. I don't want to hear the argument that watching a guy with a laptop is not entertaining. I say it is no more entertaining than watching a guy push buttons on a monome or apc.
I couldn't respectfully disagree with you more, there is a feeling you get when you sit down at a piano that you cannot get from sitting in front of an mpc and both of those feelings are very different from how it feels to be in front of a monome. same with a pair of turntables and a pair of cd decks ...... the interface is the 'Main' component of any instrument not the 'sound'
you could play the sound of a great guitar riff with all of the trimmings through a sony cd walkman and it would sound great but try playing a cd walkman as an instrument for the guitar, it's much better feeling to use an actual guitar. it's not about what the audience thinks it's about how you become one with your instrument, after that then it's what the audience thinks. i think you would write better guitar music on a guitar and give a better guitar performance on a guitar and that all of that would translate better to an audience through a guitar.

the oxygen controller might have alot of features on paper but playing percussive instruments through a keyboard interface is generally speaking as gratifying as playing keyboard/piano instruments through a percussive interface. of course both can be done and the world is your oyster. There are alot of keyboardist who like playing drums on their keyboard but not too many drummers who like playing drums on keyboards

True. I'm just tired of controllers that lack expressive controls. I want to see more controllers like this one!

http://madronalabs.com

Also, I recently watched an 80s video with Herbie Hancock talking about expressive controls in the early days of midi. He predicted that there will one day be more innovative developments in this area. I'm sad to see that there really hasn't been any new developments in this area. I want to see new breath and string instrument controllers that actually require some sort of mastery to play. I think this controller I linked is a step in the right direction and would sound amazing with operator!

I'm absolutely SO VERY HAPPY the APC took as long as it did. My order has already been changed for a Launchpad, apparently im #1 on list.
