I don't really know the answer. I would say that hip-hop is a form of EDM, because it is dance music that is electronic. But... others might not, I suppose.

End of the day, I don't really care. I think it's a dippy name, too.

Of course, EDM is WAY better than electronica... good LORD that sounds gay.

Well, that's what i hate. This endless genrefication to make people sound cool. Who fucking cares if it sounds "gay?" You think EDM somehow sounds less stupid than electronica? If it does, it's by a hair. All of these fucking genre names sound stupid. And frankly, the endless lableing and jingoism is one of the things that is holding back some good electronic music from further entering the mainstream. You make people feel stupid when they say "oh, i like this techno you're playing" And then you come back with, "no, this is minimal tech house."

I said that EDM is a dippy name. It's just slightly less gay than Electronica.

And if you were paying attention to my previous posts, you'd notice that I don't really get so specialized in what I play.

I just say I play progressive... and that's a big huge grey area, with bits of house, trance, breaks, ambient, downtempo, etc... and not all of it has a straight 4/4 kick rhythm.

I've tried to research and listen, tried to distinguish one genre from another, and have given up.

It seems that any swingin' dick with an MPC/PeeCee/loops/decks/etc is an instant superstar/producer/remixer/rehasher/DeeJay.

There are billions of dance tracks out there, many of them probably done by some guy in his bedroom, and they're all starting to sound the same to me - "mmphhh... mmphhh... mmphhh... mmphhh... filter sweep... more mmphhh... mmphhh... mmphhh... mmphhh... another filter sweep..." repeated ad nauseum... scratchy... scratchy... scratchy... scratchy... "Put your hands in the air!..."

See? Even I can make one! All I need now is to find a 70s/80s sample of someone else's originality and talent to stick behind it, and I've made a bangin' choon to go on the next Ministry of Sound CD!

Originality and talent do it for me... guess I'm getting old... :?

There is huge irony of using the word "gay" here.

Most electronic dance music (disco then house then techno) has it's roots in gay clubs.

Not all dance music is that formulaic (though essentially all music is to some degree formulaic). You need to dig a bit deeper to find good stuff that's all.

dig a little deeper... its out there, yes even in 'EDM'... in fact especially.

but you have to dig pretty deep to find the good stuff...

it's all a matter of taste. But many times in my life I have heard people dissing some style of music like house or techno or trance or hip hop or whatever... but when you actually talk to them about it you can find the closest they ever got to techno was 2 Unlimited & the closest they got to hip hop was Will Smith...

When u r into a scene u know about the good stuff, the good parties, the good music. If you are outside of this scene its practically non-existant.

some of the best tracks i ever hear, i hear just once or twice at underground parties played by some dj no one knows the name of...

The world is full of bland copy cat everything, don't worry about it: todays underground sound is tomorrows chart hit but by then the underground has moved on...

I truly believe there is & always will be great music in every genre, sub-genre & pigeonhole... u just gotta look for it. if u want to...

originate not imitate...

OK... being a old funk/disco/bass guitar/Latin percussion freak, point me at some original funky syncopated non-"mmphh... mmphh... mmphh... mmphh... filter sweep..." EDM!

Just a minute... searching for a Motown/disco sample to plagiarize and stick behind it...

...you need to find your own way here because you're already asking for something thats specific to your tastes. what might turn me on might turn you off... man I LOVE FUNK music, probably more than many styles but this is something that has been done... done to death even... the problem with a lot of commercial music is exactly this: that it draws on its inspiration from 70's disco while sticking a 'modern' beat underneath...

I really wouldnt know what direction to point you in...

But electronic music with funk n soul? Hold on a minute! I would def suggest heading down to co-op every other sunday... small, dark, loud & full of people lost in the music... Its a great party, all ages, all races, little to no attitude & very welcoming...

the party is run by 4Hero & friends.

music by people like: bugz in the attic, DKD...

its a a start.

Broken Beat: definately syncopated..!

personally i like a bit of mmmph mmmph... actually i prefer doof doof... and filter sweeps are great toobut i don't like pretty much any commercial stuff and the doof doof filter stuff i hear play and like is unlikely to ever be heard by 99.99999999999999999999999999999% of this planet.

but i also love parliament, the meters, sly stone et al...

i love music..!

good music is good regardless of genre... its something to do with the mind of the creator not the style they chose to let it out in...

what did you think of Kraftwerk at the time they appeared?

Cheers! I just may have to pop down to London and check it out.

Original EDM with funk & soul... now THAT sounds like something I could get into.

Which of the 43,789 genres... oops... just gone up to 43,847... would that fall under?

Hambone, it works both ways you know. Personally i can find more originallity in oomph oomph music, compared to whats in the charts today.
How many covers of "tainted love" can there be released till somebody gets fed up with them? Seriously, i could probably find 10 covers that made it to the charts in the last 2 years.
Ugh... MTV....

EDM, Latin percussion, jazz,..... It's all original, compared to those ripoff artists on MTV.

Did you ever see that "choppin broccoli" snl sketch by Dana Carvey? If not, check it out. It makes a very good point about these so called popstars. Though it's more a stab at rock ballad song singers.

Try people like Shake, Carl Craig, Henrik Schwarz, Aardvarck, Morgan Geist, Todd Terje, DJ YoavB (in fact Delsin, Rush Hour etc as labels), Lindstrom...

Those are just off the top of my head.
