Show a monome video to someone who isn't a computer music fiend and they just get too confused to enjoy/notice the music.

+1.....but I still wish I had monster custom model that had 256 + some knobs

Remember, it's not how you feel that's important but how you look.

People don't go to see people play music.

They go to see - A Performance.

Case closed.

As much as it saddens me to see fuckwits jumping up and down not doing anything. It is shit boring watching some crouched over a laptop.

But I'm not a DJ and don't understand that world and never will.

To me, music is still an art form.

Art is selfish. Do what you want, present it how you want it. Fuck anyone else.

If anyone wishes to say. "Well how do you make money from having that attitude" You are in music for the wrong reason.

COSM is amazing but there's a problem right there. You can't hold everybody up to that standard. Electronica composers are held up to a higher standard than traditional musicians in some cases and I'm not exactly sure why. You could go to a rock show and the guitarist could play the 4 easiest chords ever invneted the entire show or ride the muted downtuned E string and people would go nuts and come out saying it was an amazing show. My grandmother could play Nirvana songs.

But stick a guy in front of a computer with a couple controllers and you expect him to flawlessly perform the work of an entire band live, which by the way was actaully performed by a computer, and at the same time look like the rock star guitarist who is mostly just posing.
sigh, so true... and so sad... i don't think i can make it to the last page of this thread :|

edit: but after reading all the posts... Geez I've always wanted to play Live, as I don't have much time for making music and I'm too lazy to make a proper "non-live" arrangement. I'm still getting the material pieces done and I simply can not imagine doing something that I'm not happy with.

But that's just me, and by being happy I mean getting BOTH the satisfaction of playing my own, at least 50% improvised  , stuff AND the pleasure of people dancing to my music...

Faking anything just suxx. I can understand bands and preparing some stuff for an electronic live act. But when I see vocalists not singing... or DJs faking a two-turntable/CDJ set... Jeez, just leave it to ppl who are really devoted to what they do.

I find it's always good to leave a few knobs unmapped so you can poseur like the rest of them.

BTW That Justice pic apparently has another one after it where he plugs the cable back in after the messagebox popped up saying it's been unplugged.

I recall once seeing an Industrial act in a this really crappy basement venue.

All it was. A guy and a girl, singing along to a CD player and occasionally a few keys on a synth got touched. There was no 'performance' to cover for the lack of instrumentation either.

They weren't to shy about hiding the CD player. The guy had the remote for the cd player in his pocket the whole set and would punch in the number of the next track they wanted to sing along to.

It was basically two PVC'ed fuckwits do karaoke. But of course the industri-tards loved it.

Apparently they supported KMFDM at one point too, we they weren't regarded (in that circle) as a "kids in their garage' group.

Astral projection tour in portugal was the most disapointing thing i ever saw (and listen)... they had 2 dates in portugal one in oporto and another one in Lisbon... they asked for:

2 Pioneer Cdj 1000mk2
1 Mixer Pioneer Djm600
1 mixer Mackie with 24 tracks
2 Norldleads
1 midi keyboard Edirol

ok with all this material they were going to touch in something... WRONG!!!

first date in Oporto they were so drunk and lots of other illegal things that the only thing they could do was to put a cd in a cdj and touch play!!! they didn´t made anything else, just one track of the mixer and one cdj!!! A playback fake from one of the most recognized artists in the trance cene... one of them (the guy with the long hair) were so drunk that he couldn´t be on stage, the other was speaking with everybody... the strangest was that they opened the laptops to make the fake more credible!!!

Lisbon, again drunk, again the same material they asked, but this time they didn´t used the cdj... they used a Ipod!!! uhau is this true??? yes it is and Astral did it!!!

and the top of the top´s: one of them were so drunk that he falled from the stage with the face in the floor!!!! yeah what a great artists you are . . .

then they wanted to receive the money and the conversation was:
astral proj.: "WHERE IS MY MONEY!"???!!!
party producer: "WHERE IS MY LIVE ACT"???!!!
astral proj.: "I WANT MY MONEY"!!!! IM FROM ISRAEL"???!!!
party producer: "OH YEAH; AND IM FROM PORTUGAL"!!!! and the party producer beat in him twice

this is a true story and if you want to book astral proj. in the material list put a Ipod because they will need it hehehe

LOTS OF OHM SHIVA SHANTI PLUR MEGA TRANCE TO YOU
ASTRAL PROJECTION
Another good example (i dont know if this is posted earlier, right now i'm too lazy to search) :D

The reason that I hold myself to a higher standard is because it is so easy to create music these days. Programs are so advanced that you do not have to know anything about music theory. I'm from memphis, a town that was founded on playing insturments. With some vst's or suite you can simply layer some stuff, toss on some loops on the fly and should be able to easily do a show from scratch. I've been to festivals where folks just do that, I just did not realize how simple it was. This is just the way I feel.

We should all hold ourselves to a higher standard. As tech gets better so should we. This is the way music progresses as well as performance.

Since you can already route trakor, torq into ableton and the bridge is coming out it will push the need to do truly on the fly performance.

This is just the way my mind works.....if it's preplanned it is not that fun for me, and this is why I think I'm having issues with live 8 that others are not because I am not realizing that most folks are having stuff already planned out.

Nothing wrong with that.....we are all different in the way we approach music but the goal is the same. Get every girl in the place to dance the night away

some people are really pros regarding fake shows.. i once heard about the moskau gig of germanys most famous and unbelifeable good and mega phatastic slime pop act.

He has hired a complete band for his playback act... the job of the band was of cause faking a life show..but... the last cord..and drum soloing and rummbel..they had to play really life...
The illusion was perfect.. just.. on one song the dieter re entred the stage... stumbled over a mic cable..felt down.. and started singing bevor even have reached the mic.....

but beside that little accident... pretty clever way to do a fake show...

I LOVE the attention span of this post...super cool.
Love the stories...
I have my Michael Jackson(RIP) story to tell:
His PA system was still sitting there on the island of Ko Phangan, Thailand, and it was New Years.
7000 + people, the sound system was OUTRAGEOUS.
So why was his PA system there, because they need that for the look of the m video he was making.

I dunno what that racket was, but most of the DJ's were at 160 bpm, and it had a beat, and a synth.
It was nauseating, and I went to check out the DJ booth and these dudes had Generation 2 iPods.

The suppossed DJ was doing all his choreography, and up there looking super slick and pro!

I believe I still have footage of this.
I wouldn't have cared had I been into the sounds but it made me want to seek out drugs. (cause there's no enjoying this otherwise)

In defense of these dudes who's pics are all over the web with unplugged gear, those guys don't look even remotely sober to me, no offense to their fans, and I myself have been so baked that I thought I was changing the sound when in reality it was completely in my imagination.
It's tricky to admit something like that though to an audience, don't you think?
HOpefully they can laugh about it later ;)

Electronic music and performance.

Or you got you laptop only and got not much performance to give to the audience.
add the fact you don't like to be in front of your screen just firing some clips,
Then you buy the controlers you want/need and you're good to go.

Two years ago, Luke Vibert came to my town for a liveset.

He played two hours, the first was not so bad, but nothing was really new to hear.
First He remixed some of his own tracks, he was using Traktor all the way long.
Then he started remixing tracks from his buddies>> Richard D. James, Mike dred etc.

Just on the laptop and a little controler [lend by another musician].

It was not a faked performance but every musicians out there were lacking some vibes.
and disappointed as well.
